The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team faced the College of Staten Island at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, on Friday, December 7.
The Cougars (2-7, 1-2 CUNYAC) were defeated by the Dolphins (3-6, 2-1) by a final score of 112-80, the squad's third-consecutive loss since
blowing out Hunter College in their CUNYAC opener exactly one week prior.
MEC quickly fell behind 9-0 less than two minutes into the game and never recovered. The Cougar deficit reached as high as 26 points in the first half and MEC entered the locker room down 19.
The gap was never closer than 17 in the second half as the black-and-gold often settled for jumpers early in the shot clock which led to numerous quick layups in transition for Staten Island.
Justin Sutton, who came into the game second in the CUNYAC with 22.8 ppg, only managed two points in the first half but ended up leading Medgar Evers with 20 points on seven-of-19 shooting. Freshman
Chad Marcus contributed a career-high 17 points and was 6-12 from the floor. Both players grabbed four rebounds.
Sean Webb (14 points),
Jafet Thomas (eight points, eight rebounds) and Mousa Siners (nine rebounds) also had notable stat lines, while
Naquavah Jackson had a career-high seven points and made the first three field goals of his MEC career.
The Cougars have time to regroup as they return to action on December 29, when they open the Dr. Carol V. DeCosta Classic, hosted by Medgar Evers at the Cougars Cave. The team will face New Paltz in their opening contest of the tournament.
