Men's Basketball Notches Win Over Lehman

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a home CUNYAC contest against Lehman College at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, on Wednesday, January 23.

The Cougars (7-11, 6-4 CUNYAC) defeated the Lightning (6-11, 4-6) by a final score of 90-83. MEC is currently tied with John Jay for fourth place in the CUNYAC, and sits two games ahead of Lehman in 6th. York, CCNY and Hunter take up the 7-9 spots, with each team sporting a 2-8 conference record.

Medgar started strong, taking a 25-18 lead after an Elias Scott pull-up three pointer. Lehman then went on a 16-4 run to take a 34-29 lead, which was their largest lead of the game. MEC responded with a 12-2 run of their own and carried the lead into halftime, up 50-46.

The Cougars never trailed throughout the second half and led by as much as eight, but the Lightning managed to tie the game on four occasions, including 80-80 with just over two minutes left. The black-and-gold showed their mental toughness down the stretch, knocking down their free throws and jumpers and playing lockdown defense on the Lightning as the Cougars closed the game on a 10-3 run.

Justin Sutton led all scorers with 27 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding four rebounds and four assists. Joancarlo Bonilla contributed 23 points and five boards, while Patrick Senior (7 pts, 10 reb) and Jafet Thomas (11 pts, 7 reb) both were near double-doubles.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, January 26, when they take on the College of Staten Island on the road at 1 pm. Live stream and live stats links are available on the men's basketball schedule.
