The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team played a home CUNYAC contest against Lehman College at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, on Wednesday, January 23.
The Cougars (1-18, 1-9 CUNYAC) defeated the Lightning (1-17, 1-9) by a final score of 66-44, breaking a 21-game losing streak. The 22-point margin of victory represents the team's largest since December 11, 2014, when they defeated the Pratt Institute 57-7.
This was the Cougars' first home victory since January 11, 2017 against John Jay. Medgar Evers' sports information staff was unable to find a game where MEC women's basketball ever defeated Lehman, dating back to 1990.
Medgar jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but Lehman responded with a 12-2 run to close the first quarter. The second quarter continued to be back-and-forth as the lead changed hands twice, but the Lightning held a 20-16 lead at halftime.
The Cougars offense was on fire in the second half, winning the third quarter 27-6, with
Janaisha Carrington leading the way with 10 points and three assists in the quarter. The black-and-gold continued their electric offense throughout the fourth quarter and only extended their lead.
Despite shooting only 15.2% from the floor in the first half, the Cougars hit 20-of-37 (54.1%) in the second half while outscoring Lehman 50-24 after the intermission.
Carrington finished with 17 points and seven assists, while
Jessycca Myers led all scorers with 21 points and added eight rebounds and six steals.
Cyndi Whyte also contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, January 26, when they take on the College of Staten Island on the road at 3 pm. Live stream and live stats links are available on the women's basketball schedule.
