The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team faced John Jay College on Monday, January 7, in New York, NY.
The Cougars (4-10, 3-3 CUNYAC) beat the Bloodhounds (7-6, 2-3) by a final score of 74-73.
Medgar jumped out to a quick 11-5 lead and their advantage soon reached 11 points. John Jay pulled it back to 29-28 but the Cougars held on for the rest of the half and entered intermission up 41-35, with
Sean Webb contributing 13 points in five minutes.
JJC scored nine straight points to open the second half and held a single-digit lead until there was only 1:54 left in regulation.
Joancarlo Bonilla hit an and-one layup on the fast break and sunk the free throw to put the Cougars up 71-70.
John Jay hit one free throw and then Essien Epps hit a jumper with 1:06 left to give John Jay a 73-72 lead. After the teams traded misses,
Justin Sutton sunk a midrange jumper with 4.2 seconds. Epps had one more chance at the buzzer but hit the rim from long distance.
Sutton finished with 21 points and added five rebounds and three assists, while Bonilla finished with 13 and four assists.
The Cougars move to 3-3 in the CUNYAC entering the Friday, January 11 home game against York College, which will start at 8 pm at the Cougars Cave.
