The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a home CUNYAC game against Brooklyn College at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, on Wednesday, February 13.
The Cougars (9-16, 7-9 CUNYAC) defeated the Bulldogs (14-11, 9-7) by a final score of 76-73. MEC advances to the CUNYAC playoffs as the #5 seed, and will travel to face #4 Brooklyn in a quarterfinal game at Brooklyn College at 1 pm on Saturday, February 16.
Despite the narrow margin of victory, the Cougars led wire-to-wire, with a tie at 9-9 the only one of the game. However, the game was not decided until the final seconds as Brooklyn hung around.
Joancarlo Bonilla continued
his scorching form from deep by scoring MEC's first nine points of the game, all on three pointers. Bonilla was 5-5 from deep in the first half with 17 points. MEC led by as much as 11 points, but Brooklyn fought back to make it a 37-30 game at halftime.
Bonilla hit another three pointer to open the second half and the Cougars were soon up by 15 after opening the half on an 11-3 run. A
Darrell Spaulding triple put MEC up 51-35, their largest lead of the game.
The Cougar lead was comfortably in double-digits until Brooklyn switched to a full-court press with time winding down. The Bulldogs pulled to within one point at 72-71 after a Jade Spencer and-one, but
Mousa Sinera converted a clutch put-back and
Justin Sutton hit a pair of free-throws to close out the game as Brooklyn could only muster a layup attempt on their final possession.
Sutton and Bonilla each finished with 28 points on the night. Bonilla was 7-9 from three and 8-12 from the field, while Sutton added nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Sean Webb also finished with a very nice nine points and seven assists.
The Cougars face Brooklyn at Brooklyn in the CUNYAC quarterfinals on Saturday, February 16 at 1 pm.
