Women's Basketball Loses John Jay Thriller

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team played a home CUNYAC game against John Jay College at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY, on Tuesday, February 5.

The Cougars (1-22, 1-13 CUNYAC) fell to the Bloodhounds (11-11, 7-6) by a final score of 53-52.

The first half was a low-scoring and physical affair, with Medgar shooting just 15% (6-40) from the floor and John Jay's All'aha Albright receiving a double technical foul and an ejection. Despite this fact, the black-and-gold were only trailing 22-19 at the intermission, behind Cyndi Whyte's 10 points.

The second half was much more lively in terms of scoring. John Jay opened a seven-point lead (41-34) midway through the fourth quarter, before MEC responded with a 16-5 run during which Janaisha Carrington scored or assisted on 14 of the points. MEC carried a three-point lead into the final minute of the game.

With MEC up by three points with eight seconds left, Carrington was assessed an unsportsmanlike foul, which gave John Jay two free throws and possession. After Nyasha Howard hit both free throws, the Bloodhounds received possession and Howard drove to the basket. Carrington was charged with another foul with two seconds left and John Jay's Betchina Jean Pierre sunk both of the free throws to give the Bloodhounds the late, narrow victory.

Whyte finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Carrington posted 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds.

The Cougars return to action on Monday, February 11 at 5:30 pm for a road contest against York College in Jamaica, NY.
