Epic Men's Volleyball Comeback Falls Just Short vs. CCNY

BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's volleyball team played a home CUNYAC match against City College of New York at the Cougars Cave on Tuesday, March 26.

The Cougars (13-5, 4-3 CUNYAC) fell to the Beavers (12-4, 3-2) in five sets (23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 11-15).

The first set was filled with runs, with each team recording a 6-0 run and CCNY producing an additional 5-0 run, and the Beavers were able to squeak out the first set. The second set was never really that close as CCNY jumped out to a 6-1 lead and never looked back, and Medgar was in a 2-0 hole.

Having lost 11 consecutive sets dating back to the Hunter match last Tuesday, the Cougars would need to dig deep in the third set, and it didn't look promising when they began the set trailing 6-2. Medgar was behind until Cody Ramsey and Gerod Humphrey combined on a block assist to put the Cougars up 13-12. MEC then went on an 8-3 run to take a 21-15 advantage, before CCNY stormed back to make the score 23-22 MEC. Another block by Ramsey and Jovan Scott was followed by an Austin Romeo service ace to close out the set and extend the match.

Set four was extremely tight, with neither team taking more than a three-point lead, but the Cougars were able to fight back from a 22-21 deficit and won the set on a Nius St. Clair kill.

In the fifth set, the Cougars looked to be close to completing the amazing comeback when they took a 9-5 lead, but the Beavers gnawed their way back with a 10-2 run to close out the match in five sets.

St. Clair led the Cougars with 22 kills and added eight digs, five blocks, and two aces, while Enmanuel Jaquez produced a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, adding three aces. Kareem Cyrus totaled 21 assists and six digs, while Romell Carter dished out 20 assists of his own. Jovan Scott also contributed a season-high six blocks.

This was a remarkably evenly-matched contest, with both teams totaling 69 points and 11 aces each.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday, March 28, for a home match against Sarah Lawrence College at the Cougars Cave at 7 pm.
