Women's Volleyball Continues CUNYAC, Nonconference Play

The Medgar Evers College women's volleyball team traveled to The College at Old Westbury for a tri-match on Saturday, September 21, and hosted Brooklyn College for a CUNYAC match at the Cougars Cave on Tuesday, September 24.

The Cougars' first match at Old Westbury was against the host Panthers, who dropped in 24 service aces compared to MEC's three (all by Sashamoni Burnett) in the three-set match. Noshka Gonzalez-Sanchez and Britenie Marcelus led the Cougars with four digs apiece.

The black-and-gold bounced back with a much stronger performance against their CUNYAC competitors, the Cardinals of York College. Burnett contributed seven solo blocks (the only blocks in the match for either team) and a team-high eight kills, while Marcelus (17 digs) led four Cougars with double-digit digs, including Gonzalez-Sanchez (14), Quiara Brye Bey (14), and Diana Williams (12).

Cristina Carnegie added a team-leading nine assists while Bey contributed three aces in the four-set defeat.

The Bulldogs traveled up Bedford Avenue to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC contest on Tuesday evening. Burnett led all playerd with four kills, as did Marcelus with seven digs, but again the Cougars struggled to return the Brooklyn serve consistently and fell in three sets.

The Cougars are now 0-10 on the season with a 0-2 record in CUNYAC play. The team competes next this Saturday, September 28, when the team travels to Baltimore, MD, for a tri-match against hosts Notre Dame (MD) and University of Valley Forge.
