The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team played two games on back-to-back days on Friday and Saturday, January 10-11.
The Cougars (2-10, 0-5 CUNY Athletic Conference) fell to John Jay College (6-7, 3-1) 101-44 in a Friday night CUNYAC contest, before defeating Mount Holyoke College 53-51 in a road game up in Massachusetts the following afternoon.
JANUARY 10 VS. JOHN JAY
Friday night's game against John Jay is one that the Cougars will certainly like to forget soon. The Bloodhound offense and full-court press defense was relentless throughout the 40 minutes and the black-and-gold were not able to keep up. John Jay took an early lead and held on throughout the contest.
Cyndi Whyte posted her third double-double in a row with 15 points and 11 rebounds, adding two steals.
Jo-Ann Elliott recorded five steals in addition to her six points, while
Destiny Simmons contributed six assists, four points, and four rebounds.
The Cougars' next CUNYAC contest is Friday, January 17, when they take on York College on the road in Jamaica, NY, at 5:30 pm.
JANUARY 11 VS. MOUNT HOLYOKE
The Cougars only had a few hours to get ready for their next game, which took place the following day at 1 pm in Massachusetts. Despite this, Medgar took an early 2-0 lead and, while Mount Holyoke tied the game twice in the second quarter, the black-and-gold held the lead for nearly the entire game.Â
After a Simmons three-pointer, the Cougars took their largest lead of the game, holding a 44-35 advantage with nine and a half minutes left. However, Holyoke mounted a comeback and, after a three-pointer with 90 seconds left, took a 50-49 lead, the first time Medgar had trailed all game.
The black-and-gold showed their resilience, with Simmons hitting a layup and then two free throws, and the Cougars were able to get stops on defense to preserve a narrow victory.
Simmons was dominant with 24 points, six steals, three rebounds, and three assists, while Whyte recorded her fourth double-double in a row with 13 points and 13 rebounds,
Onella Ireland also contributed 12 rebounds and eight points.
The Cougars will look to add to their win total this season in their next match, this Friday at York.
