Women's Basketball Wins Back-to-Back Games for the First Time Since 2010

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team played two games on Saturday and Sunday, January 25 and 26.

The first game was a road CUNY Athletic Conference game at Lehman College, which the Cougars won 69-49. On Sunday, Medgar traveled down to Washington D.C. and defeated Trinity Washington University by a score of 74-23.

This is the first time Medgar women's basketball has won two consecutive games since December 4 and 5, 2010.

SATURDAY 1/25 AT LEHMAN

The Cougars fell behind 5-0 early against the Lightning, and the black-and-gold trailed in the first quarter by as much as 6 points (14-8). However, Medgar closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to enter the second quarter up by 2.

The Cougars picked up where they left off, scoring the first 7 points of the second quarter to take a 23-14 lead. Lehman fought back and the teams traded baskets and stops until halftime. Medgar took a 35-29 lead into the intermission.

The third quarter was quite close between the two teams, and Lehman even pulled within two points of Medgar. Still, the Cougars held onto the lead for the entire quarter and led 46-41 entering the final 10 minutes. In the fourth quarter, the black and gold dominated, outscoring the Lighting 23-8 in the final 10 minutes and sealing their first CUNYAC victory of the season.

Onella Ireland led the Cougars with 23 points and added 9 rebounds, while Cyndi Whyte added 17 and 8. Vanessa Zambrano dished out five assists in addition to her five rebounds and 12 points, while Chaniya Daughtry led the team with 10 rebounds.

SUNDAY 1/26 AT TRINITY

Medgar jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage and never looked back. After the first quarter, the score was 24-7, and at halftime Medgar was up 40-16.

In the third quarter, the Cougars clamped down, allowing Trinity to score 0 points while scoring 14, so the black-and-gold led 54-16 entering the fourth quarter.

Whyte led the way for Medgar with 30 points on 13 of 19 shooting, adding 15 rebounds as well. Ireland contributed a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Cougars shot 30-of-69 from the floor while holding Trinity to just 8-of-51.

Medgar returns to action on Tuesday, January 28, when the team hosts Brooklyn College at the Cougars Cave at 6 pm for the annual Blackout Game.
