Women's Basketball Nearly Takes Down CCNY

NEW YORK, NY - The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team took on The City College of New York in a road CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) game at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on Monday, January 6.

The Cougars (1-8, 0-3 CUNYAC) fell to the Beavers (1-11, 1-2) by a final score of 60-50.

Medgar got off to a good start in the first quarter, matching CCNY shot for shot and taking an 18-13 lead after a Jo-Ann Elliott jumper. After the first quarter, the black-and-gold held a four-point lead.

The Cougars were even better in the second quarter, and after Vanessa Zambrano stole the ball, she hit a buzzer-beating three pointer to put Medgar ahead by nine points entering the intermission.

Cyndi Whyte scored the opening points of the second half on a layup to put the black and gold ahead 43-32. Unfortunately, the Beavers outscored the Cougars 28-7 the rest of the way, with the 2nd-leading scorer in NCAA Division III, Reilly Boehm, scoring 15 of the points, including eight of eight free throws. Despite shooting an efficient 15-32 (46.9%) from the field in the first half, Medgar shot only 4-29 (13.8%) in the second half, missing all five of their three-point attempts after the break.

Whyte (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Zambrano (11 points, 10 rebounds) led the way for Medgar with double-doubles, while Shae-Quana Brathwaite posted totals of 11 points, nine rebounds, and four assists.

The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, January 8, when they host CUNYAC foes Baruch College at the Cougars Cave at 6 pm.
