Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ben Trotto

Despite 26 & 25 Performance, Men's Basketball Falls to CCNY

BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team hosted the City College of New York at the Cougars Cave for a CUNY Athletic Conference game on Monday, February 10.

The Cougars (6-16, 3-8 CUNYAC) fell to the Beavers (3-19, 2-9) by a final score of 83-76.

The early action was back-and-forth, and Medgar took a 11-9 lead after a Mousa Sinera layup. CCNY then went on a 24-11 run to take a 33-22 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. By halftime, the Cougars had clawed back to trailing 37-29.

Sinera had led Medgar up to that point with a first-half double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds, on five-of-seven shooting.

The Cougars started out strong in the second half, battling back to make it a 44-41 game after an Elias Scott layup with 13 minutes left. However, CCNY immediately went on an 10-2 run to make it 54-43. The Cougars slowly chipped away, but CCNY kept hitting tough shots.

Despite this, Medgar fought back to make the score 75-72 after back-to-back Sinera fastbreak layups with 46 seconds left. Medgar had the chance to make it a one-point game with 37 seconds left after James Julien was fouled following an emphatic Sinera chase-down block.

However, the referees decided to assess a technical foul to Medgar for leaving the bench in the excitement of Sinera's block, which killed the Cougar rally as the Beavers hit their free throws to close the game.

Sinera finished with a massive 26 points, 25 rebounds (including 12 offensive), three steals, and two blocks, while Marcus Lewis and Dimitri Weeks contributed 12 points apiece.

The team returns to action on Wednesday, February 12, for a road CUNYAC contest at John Jay College at 7 pm.
