BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team hosted the City College of New York at the Cougars Cave for a CUNY Athletic Conference game on Monday, February 10.
The Cougars (6-15, 2-9 CUNYAC) defeated the Beavers (2-20, 2-9) by a final score of 67-61, snapping a 17-game losing streak against the Harlem school dating back to 2012.
Medgar got out to a hot start with a quick 7-0 lead, but City College fought back and had taken a 12-11 lead later in the quarter. A
Chaniya Daughtry put back gave the Cougars a 13-12 lead which they held until the end of the first quarter, but by midway through the second quarter the black-and-gold trailed by five points.
The game continued in back and forth style, with the Cougars tying the game four times in the third quarter. However, the visiting team took an eight-point lead, and they extended their lead to 54-45 with just over eight minutes left.
The Cougars then went on a 16-2 run over the next seven minutes, including eight
Cyndi Whyte points, to take a five-point lead with a minute left. Although CCNY hit two shots, the black-and-gold remained mentally tough as they hit six of their eight free throws in the final minute to seal the crucial victory, which vaults Medgar into the 6th and final CUNYAC playoff spot.
Whyte capped off a dominant senior night performance with 24 points and 22 rebounds, while fellow senior
Semina Radoncic (13 pts, 13 reb, 3 ast, 3 blocks), freshman
Chaniya Daughtry (9 pts, 14 reb, 4 blocks), and
Destiny Simmons (18 points, 5 assists) also had big nights and made clutch plays down the stretch.
The Cougars dominated on the boards, outrebounding the Beavers 72 to 53.
The team returns to action on Wednesday, February 12, for a road CUNYACÂ contest at John Jay College at 5 pm.
