Men's Basketball Defeats York, Clinches CUNYAC Playoff Berth

BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a home CUNY Athletics Conference game against York College at the Cougars Cave on Saturday, February 15.

The Cougars (7-17, 4-9 CUNYAC) defeated the Cardinals (8-17, 4-10) by a final score of 95-92. With the win over York and CCNY's loss to Hunter on Saturday, the Cougars sealed their spot in the CUNYAC playoffs, which will determine both the CUNYAC champion and which team represents CUNY at the NCAA Division III tournament.

York dominated the early action, with the Cardinals taking a 26-13 lead which stretched to as much as 14 points (33-19) with under seven minutes left in the first half. Donald Hartley Jr. of York went bananas in the first half with 25 points and hitting six of eight threes, but once Medgar adjusted their defense to the threat he posed, they limited York's offense and began to make more shots themselves.

After an Elias Scott buzzer-beater three, the Cougars trailed by just four points (47-43) at halftime.

Medgar regained a 58-56 lead after another Scott three-pointer and build up a 10-point lead after a Keison McIntosh three with seven minutes left. The Cardinals hung around but with two minutes left, Dimitri Weeks put the Cougars back up 10 points with a midrange jumper.

York fought back to within one possession and Hartley had a chance to tie the game with 13 seconds left with a pair of free throws. Luckily, the freshman missed his first free throw.

Weeks was able to re-establish a three-point lead with a pair of free throws on the other end, and the defense prevented York from hitting a game-tying shot at the end of the game to hold on for the win.

Mousa Sinera recorded his sixth double-double in a row, totaling 27 points, 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a block, while Marcus Lewis provided 13 assists and made three steals and a block. Weeks contributed 21 points on 6-10 shooting and added five rebounds and four steals, while Elias Scott contributed a huge 18 points and five assists. Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi chipped in another 14 points as well.

The Cougars play their final game of the regular season at Brooklyn College on Tuesday, February 18, at 7 pm.
