BROOKLYN, NY - The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team faced York College in a home CUNY Athletics Conference game at the Cougars Cave on Saturday, February 15.
The Cougars (6-17, 2-11 CUNYAC) fell to the Cardinals (10-14, 7-7) by a final score of 72-38.
The first quarter was evenly matched between both sides, with York jumping out to a 17-10 lead before Medgar closed the quarter down just 4.
Cyndi Whyte scored 10 of the Cougars' 15 points in the first quarter.
When Whyte made a layup with 50 seconds left in the quarter, she scored her 1,000th point in her four-year Medgar career. The senior became the fifth women's basketball student-athlete in school history to accomplish this feat, the first since Nia Tompkins in 2016.
In the game, the Cougars struggled to keep up with York's advantage in depth off the bench, as the Cardinals opened a 19-point halftime lead, outscoring Medgar 19-4 in the second quarter.Â
The black-and-gold trailed 45-19 midway through the third before they fought back with a 9-2 run. However, York was able to stop the Cougar run and hold on for the rest of the contest.
Whyte finished with another double-double of 16 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals, while
Destiny Simmons contributed 14 points and four assists.
The team returns to action on Tuesday, February 18, for a road CUNYAC contest at Brooklyn College at 5 pm.
