Men's Basketball Stops Baruch, Records Victory

NEW YORK, NY - The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team played a road CUNY Athletics Conference game at Baruch College on Tuesday, February 4.

The Cougars (6-15, 3-7 CUNYAC) defeated the Bearcats (12-8, 6-4) by a final score of 59-56.

Medgar was ready for the contest after their heartbreaking defeat to the same opponent last month, and jumped out to an early lead which they stretched out to 24-18 after an Isaiah Garvey-Mwazi layup.

Baruch fought back to tie the score at 26, but Garvey-Mwazi beat the buzzer with a three-pointer as Medgar entered the half with a three-point lead.

The black-and-gold started out well in the second half, and had built a seven-point lead after a Dimitri Weeks jumper. Baruch quickly tied the game before Medgar built another six-point lead, but the Bearcats again fought back to take a 52-47 lead with four and a half minutes left.

The Cougars then went on a 7-0 run with two Nagay Herrera Jr. layups and a Keison McIntosh three, but Baruch took a 56-55 lead with 33 seconds left after a layup.

However, Weeks drew a foul and hit both free throws, and the Medgar defense forced a stop on the next possession. McIntosh hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left and the black-and-gold defense again prevented Baruch from scoring, and Medgar had sealed the victory.

Mousa Sinera posted his 11th double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, adding two assists, two steals and a block, while McIntosh was the next-highest scorer with 10 points.

The Cougars' low-scoring win marked a departure from the team's normally fast-paced style of play, which has yielded 84.4 points per game on offense this season. Despite being outrebounded 47-37, the Cougars forced 21 Baruch turnovers while conceding only 14. They also allowed Baruch to shoot just 35.6% from the field and 20% from beyond the arc.

The Cougars return to action on Monday, February 10, for a home CUNYAC contest against CCNY, which will also be Senior Night.
