The Medgar Evers men's soccer team split a pair of CUNYAC matches that were played at Kingsborough Community College, suffering a 4-0 loss to the Hawks of Hunter College this past Wednesday, before earning its first victory of the 2021 campaign on Saturday, outlasting the Cardinals of York College by a score of 4-3. With the split, the Cougars are now 1-9 on the season, and 1-4 in CUNYAC action.

In Wednesday's loss to the Hawks, the contest stayed scoreless until the 32nd minute when Josh Liyadzhanov would collect a pass from Sammy Ahmed before finding the back of the net to give Hunter a 1-0 advantage. That would be the lone goal in the opening session.

Hunter College peppered three more shots into the net in the second stanza, scoring at 59:40 (a header by Robin Sebastian, assisted by Alejandor Sanchez), another header by Amadou Kane (from Luis Chire), and an unassisted score by Liyadzhanov.

The Hawks dominated in opportunities, registering 26 shots on the afternoon compared to just six for the Cougars. Hunter netminder Anthony Simos only had to stop three shots to earn a shutout, while Medgar goalkeeper Carl-Henry Obeissant made eight saves despite the loss.

On Saturday afternoon, Medgar Evers earned its first victory of the 2021 season thanks to an impressive offensive outbreak. The Cougars, after falling behind 1-0 early, registered four consecutive tallies to grab a commanding 4-1 lead. Those four aforementioned scores came courtesy of Salim Soumare (10:30), Availa Jackson (from Jean Horacius at 21:58), Carvel Provost (from Obeissant at 40:22), and another tally by Salim Soumare (41:43). At the half, Medgar was holding a three-goal edge.

York refused to go down quietly in the second half. Kervin Mondesir converted on a penalty kick at 69:11 to make a it a 4-2 game. The Cardinals inched closer at 75:43 when Abdul Bassa found the back of the net (from Antonio Josephs and Mondesir). From there, though, the Cougars defense would hold York in check, as Medgar would hold on for a 4-3 conference triumph.

Obeissant finally earned a victory in net, making six saves along the way.

The Cardinals held a slight edge in the shots category, registering 18 to Medgar's 16.

The Cougars will look to make it two victories in a row on Monday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Randall's Island (field No. 10) to take on the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
