Medgar loses '21-22 opener to USMMA; Sinera registers 17 points

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped its 2021-2022 season-opener on Tuesday evening, falling the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 124-64 in front of a pumped-up crowd at Liebertz Gym in King's Point, N.Y.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was led by junior Mousa Sinera, who tied for the game-high with 17 points, while also snatching eight rebounds. Andre Evans Jr. also had a double-digit performance with 10 points, and Joshua Jean Pierre grabbed a team-best nine boards.

In the blowout victory for USMMA, eight Mariners scored in double figures, including Gavin Green, who tied for the game-high of 17 points while connecting on five shots from downtown. Blaine McDonough and sophomore Bryce Bristow each notched double-doubles with 11 points and 10 rebounds apiece. Josh Kauffman nailed four triples, finalizing his evening with 14 points, and Kody Robinson contributed 12 points. Cam Baldwin and Isaac Vencel rounded out the double-digit scorers for USMMA, registering 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Baldwin also tying for the game-high with two swatted shots, and Vencel recording six assists to lead all players.

The Cougars kept the game close for only a brief time, as Medgar Evers trailed by just three, 17-14, with 12:19 remaining in the opening half. From that point forward, though, it was all Mariners. USMMA used a 22-0 run over a span of 4:20 to increase its advantage to 39-14. Kauffman drained three shots from beyond the arc during that aforementioned spurt. The Mariners then continued to put the game away by halftime, eventually building a 37-point advantage (66-29) as the teams entered the locker room for break.

The second half featured USMMA gradually building its commanding advantage, as the Mariners netted 16 of the second session's first 20 points to jump out in front by a score of 82-33. At that juncture of the evening, USMMA led by 49 with 15:02 remaining, and the Mariners eventually would go on to win by a whopping 60 points.

USMMA connected on 52.9 percent of its shots for the evening (46-of-87), while also drilling 17 three-point heaves as well. On the flip side, Medgar Evers converted on just 32.9 percent of its attempts from the floor (25-for-76). The Mariners held a ridiculous 68-35 edge on the glass, turning 22 offensive caroms into 26 second-opportunity points. USMMA dominated in the paint, netting 54 points there to the Cougars 26, and the opportunistic Mariners also scored 30 points off Medgar Evers miscues.

Medgar Evers will look to shake off their opening night defeat, as they'll welcome Kean University to the Cougar Cave. Start-time for the home opener is scheduled for 7:00pm.
