Men's basketball drops home opener to Kean, 87-76

Despite a valiant, energetic effort, the Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped its home opener, falling to Kean University 87-76 in an exciting contest played at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar slipped to 0-2 on the young 2021-2022 campaign, while Kean improved to 2-0 on the year.

Four players scored in double figures for Medgar, including junior Mousa Sinera, who was absolutely brilliant on the evening. The standout posted a double-double, draining 80 percent of his attempts from the floor (12-16) and netting a team-high 25 points, while also snatching a game-high 17 boards (seven offensive). His four registered steals also tied for the game-high.

Freshman Andre Evans Jr. narrowly missed a double-double in his first home game as a Cougar, as he scored 16 points while snatching nine boards, registering a team-high five assists, and adding a steal. Senior Keison McIntosh netted 16 points while tying for the game-high in steals with four, and Prince-Malachi Reid was very efficient in his first performance at the Cougars Cave, scoring 14 points (5-7 FG, 4-6 3pt) while adding four assists.

In a winning effort for Kean University, Patrick Strzala put on a dazzling performance, shooting 50 percent from the floor (10-20) while nailing five three-point baskets and pouring in a game-high 29 points. His 14 points rebounds were a team-best, and he tied for the game-high of seven assists. Latrell West added 17 points (5-5 FT) and three assists, and Jailen Jamison and JD Daniels netted 14 and 12 points, respectively. Jamison also added seven assists and three steals.

Medgar Evers, despite trailing 7-0 in the opening 70 seconds of the game, roared back and led 21-19 with 9:12 remaining in the opening session. Kean battle to snatch a 40-34 edge with 2:43 to go in the first half, but Medgar closed out the stanza on a 6-1 run to dash into the locker room down just a point at 41-40.

In the second half, Kean University gradually built its advantage, taking its largest lead of the non-conference affair with 11:06 remaining (a commanding 65-50 edge). Medgar Evers refused to go quietly though, putting together a 9-0 run over a span of 2:03 to cut its deficit to just six (that aforementioned run included a converted triple from McIntosh, and back-to-back trifectas from Reid). Later, with Medgar trailing just 67-62, Reid connected from downtown again, slicing his team's deficit to two with 7:20 left.

From there, it was all Kean University, as the Union, NJ school outscored Medgar Evers 20-11 the rest of the evening, connecting on 11 of 16 free throw attempts inside the final 7:05 to ice the victory.

In what was a very competitive game throughout, Kean held a slight edge in the rebounding department, snatching 50 boards to Medgar's 47. Additionally, Kean converted on 40.3 percent of its shots (31-77), with Medgar shooting just a clip below, nailing 38.7 percent of its attempts (29-75). The Union, NJ school registered 24 assists to the opposition's 16, and Medgar committed 20 turnovers compared to 18 for Kean.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will take on SUNY Maritime at the Cougars Cave. Start-time is scheduled for 1:00pm.
