The Cougars of Medgar Evers registered their first victory of the 2021-2022 season on Saturday afternoon, turning back the Privateers of SUNY Maritime by a score of 77-67. The game was played at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the triumph, Medgar is now 1-2 on the year, while SUNY Maritime, playing in its season opener, dropped to 0-1. Following the win for the Cougars, head coach Brian Nigro praised his student-athletes.

"The staff and I are extremely proud of the tenacious effort put forth by our guys today," Nigro said. "After opening the season with consecutive defeats, we continued to stay focused, practice diligently, and prepare vehemently for today's game. This is a resilient group. They've shown guts in the two games we've played in this arena, and we're excited to continue to grow and improve."

Freshman Andre Evans Jr. paced the Cougars from start to finish, netting a game-high 24 points (7-14 FG) while grabbing seven rebounds, recording four assists, and adding a game-high three steals. Veteran Keison McIntosh drilled four shots from downtown, finishing with 20 points on the afternoon, and Mousa Sinera posted yet another double-double, dropping in 12 points and snatching a game-high 16 boards.

SUNY Maritime was led by Ryan Donovan, who netted a team-high 14 points while adding five assists and four boards. Jaylin Gray put together a very versatile performance, scoring 13 points, collecting nine boards, and compiling a game-high seven assists. Nick Ovanessian narrowly missed recording a double-double, finishing with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Privateers jumped ahead early, grabbing their largest advantage of the game, a seven point edge (13-6), when Ovanessian swished a three-point basket with 15:09 remaining in the opening session. The Cougars responded swiftly, though, putting together an 11-0 run over the ensuing 3:09 to grab a 17-13 lead. That aforementioned run was highlighted by Julien James' run of seven consecutive points (three converted jumpers).

The remainder of the opening half featured a very tightly-contested game, with neither club able to snatch more than a four point lead. Medgar Evers eventually took a 34-31 edge into the locker room at halftime. It was the first time this season that the Cougars found themselves ahead at the break.

Medgar's McIntosh would drill a triple 1:04 into the second half to put the Cougars ahead 37-31, but the Privateers used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 37-all. With the game later knotted at 45 with 12:42 to go, Medgar Evers would take the lead for good 24 seconds later when Evans Jr. would converted on a pair of freebees to put his team up 47-45. The Cougars then gradually build their lead, catapulting ahead by as many as 12, before winning the game by 10.

The Cougars held a 49-43 edge in the rebounding department, while also converting on 38.8 percent of their shots (26-67) compared to 37.5 for SUNY Maritime (27-72). The Privateers lost the game despite having most assists (21-15) and steals (7-6), and less turnovers (15 to Medgar's 16) than the Cougars.

Medgar Evers will now enjoy two days off before traveling to Bridgeport, Connecticut to take on Division I Fairfield University. The game will take place at Webster Bank Arena at 7:00pm.
