NCAA Division III No. 1 Yeshiva University defeats Cougars

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a non-conference game last night, falling to Skyline power Yeshiva University by a score of 104-59. The contest took place at the Max Stern Athletic Center in New York, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped a mark of 2-7 on the 2021-2022 season, while the Maccabees won their 49th consecutive game as a program, improving to 13-0 on the year in the process.

The Yeshiva University men's basketball train kept barreling along in this one. The Maccabees, the No. 1 ranked team in Division III basketball, are now one victory away from 50 consecutive triumphs. Yeshiva has not lost a game since the opener of the 2019-2020 season, and its winning streak has now spanned across three different campaigns (including last Spring's seven contests).

Despite the loss for the Cougars, junior Mousa Sinera continued to impress with his fifth consecutive double-double, as the Bronx, NY native netted 12 points while snatching 10 rebounds. He also tied for the game-high of three steals, while adding three dimes. Two-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Andre Evans Jr. registered a double-double, as he dropped-in 11 points, tied for the game-high of 11 caroms, and recorded a team-best four assists. Finally, it was freshman Prince-Malachi Reid posting a final line of 11 points and six rebounds.

For the Maccabees, Ryan Turell led all scorers with 38 points, on 14-for-21 shooting from the field, including 6-for-10 from long range. Additionally, the standout grabbed six rebounds, blocked swatted shots, and dished out a pair of assists. Ofek Reef netted 16 points, while Oren Betesh netted 12 points to go along with three rebounds. Jordan Armstrong and Eitan Halpert each tallied 11 points with Armstrong snatching eight rebounds and the latter registering six assists and swiping a pair of steals.

The Cougars opened some eyes early on in this one, racing out to a 20-14 ledge in the opening 10:12 of action. The pendulum swung Yeshiva University's way and stayed there for the remainder of the evening from that point forward. Maccabee Ryan Turell converted on a layup to start a spurt of 12 consecutive points by Yeshiva. That aforementioned run was capped by a three-point basket by Halpert. Then, in the latter stages of the second session, Yeshiva scored 13 unanswered points that concluded with a traditional three-point play from Turell to increase its advantage to 42-24 with 2:06 remaining in the session. The Maccabees eventually took a commanding 49-28 edge into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars struggled mightily, converting on just nine shots over a 20 minute span, with the starting five combining to connect on just three. Yeshiva shot 58.3 percent in the session, going up by as many as 47 before advancing to win the game by 45.

After shooting 42.9 percent or higher for three consecutive contests, the Cougars shot 30 percent or lower from the field for the second consecutive game. Medgar Evers hit on just 21 of its 70 attempts from the floor (30 percent), while Yeshiva nailed 56.9 percent of its attempts (41-72), including a 15-30 clip (50 percent) from downtown. The Maccabees held a 45-38 edge in the rebounding department, while also slightly winning the turnover battle, committing 13 to Medgar's 14. The Cougars registered 10 steals to Yeshiva's six, but the Maccabees piled up 26 assists to Medgar's 11.

The Cougars will return to action Tuesday evening, as they stay in Brooklyn and head to the Daniel Lynch Gymnasium in Brooklyn Heights to play Division I St. Francis College (Brooklyn) in an Exhibition contest. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm. Live stats and video links are available on the Cougars men's basketball 2021-2022 schedule page.
