Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars hang tough for 84 minutes before losing to Bears

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team is still searching for its first victory of the 2021 campaign, as the Cougars lost last night to the Bears of St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn by a score of 4-0. The match took place on the No. 75 field at Randall's Island. With the defeat, Medgar slipped to 0-3, while the Bears improved to a mark of 2-1.

St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn's Menzi Simelane registered the first goal of the evening, blasting a free kick past Chery Woodson's left, giving the Bears a 1-0 edge. That would be the lone goal of the opening 45 minutes of play.

The non-conference match stayed close throughout, though the Bears broke things open by notching three tallies in the final six minutes of action. Reigning Skyline Conference Player of the Week Diego Volpe capitalized on a through-ball (from Jesus Cano), blasting the ball into the net at 84:21 to put the Bears up 2-0. St. Joseph's other two late goals came courtesy of Volpe again (from Arturo Franco and Cano) at 85:37, and an unassisted goal by Alex Helfant with two seconds remaining.

Despite the fact that the match stayed competitive through 84 minutes, St. Joseph's dominated as it pertains to opportunities, registering a total of 35 shots (eight on goal) compared to just three for Medgar Evers (one on goal).

Bears netminders Alejandro Oliveros and Luther Saint-Jean combined for the shutout, each logging 45 minutes. Saint-Jean would stop the only shot he would face. On the flip side, Chery stopped four shots despite allowing the four goals.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Monday evening, as the Cougars stay on the road to battle the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Start-time in King's Point, NY is scheduled for 7:00pm.
