The Medgar Evers men's basketball team returned to the court for the first time Since December 14, as the Cougars took on the Hawks of Hunter College in CUNYAC action. Despite scoring a season high in points, Medgar Evers lost the contest, falling to the Hawks 136-112 at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The Cougars dipped to 2-8 overall with the defeat (0-2 CUNYAC), while the Hawks catapulted to 5-7 on the year, including a mark of 1-2 in league play.

Despite the loss for the Medgar Evers, five players scored in double figures, including junior Mousa Sinera, who registered his sixth consecutive double-double. The standout netted a team-high 22 points (7-10 FG) while pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds. He converted on eight of his 11 shots from the charity stripe while adding four dimes and two steals. Keison McIntosh returned to the lineup after missing the last two regular season games (and the exhibition contest with St. Francis-Brooklyn) with injury. McIntosh scored 21 points, drilling nine of his 21 shots from the floor. He also snatched five caroms, as well. Joshua Jean Pierre posted season-highs of 14 points and 10 boards, and James Julien contributed 14 points and three boards. Finally, it was Aaron Cotterel netting a season-high 11 points.

In the victory for Hunter College, six players scored in double figures, including Cormac Reilly, who scored a game-high 26 points (11-20 FG) in 17 minutes of action while adding three steals. Jeremy Montrose posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards, and Casey Meyers contributed 14 points while tying for the game-high of six assists. Ryan Lau scored 12 points, and Luka Jakic put forth a solid 12 minutes with 11 points and six rebounds. Finally, it was Gene Propper finalizing his evening with 10 points and four caroms.

This battle between the Cougars and Hawks was originally scheduled to take place on January 4, but it was postponed. Shortly after the announcement of the postponement, Medgar Evers was hit with a miniature COVID-19 outbreak on Tuesday, January 5, so returning to action after a 27-day layoff to play a Hunter team that executes the "Grinnell Style" of basketball was certainly going to pose its challenges for the Cougars.

Medgar Evers played well in the early stages of the contest, racing out to an 11-5 advantage 3:17 into the CUNY battle. That opening spurt was highlighted by four points apiece from Sinera and McIntosh. The Hawks answered with a 15-0 run over the ensuing 2:51 to grab a 20-11 advantage, but the pendulum then swung the Cougars way, with Medgar putting together a 9-3 run over a 68 second span to slice its deficit to three, 23-20, with 12:44 remaining in the opening half.

From there, it was all Hawks. Hunter College outscored Medgar Evers 54-21 the remainder of the opening session to take a commanding 77-41 edge as time expired on the first half. In the second session, the Hawks went up by as many as 50 (110-60) with 12:43 to go in the game. Despite the large deficit, the Cougars showed encouraging fight, finishing the game on a 52-26 run.

Hunter converted on 49 percent of its attempts from the floor (49-100), while Medgar Evers also shot the ball extremely well, hitting on 43 of its 95 attempts (45.3 percent). Both teams struggled from the line (Hunter 22-35, 62.9 percent and Medgar 18-31, 58.1 percent). The Hawks held a slight edge in the assists category, compiling 28 helpers compared to 24 for the Cougars. Hunter registered a whopping 26 steals to Medgar's 14, and the Hawks held a 5-2 edge in the swatted shots column. Medgar Evers out-rebounded Hunter 62-54, and the teams combined to commit 59 turnovers (Medgar Evers had 35, Hunter 24).

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday evening, as they welcome the Beavers of the City College of New York to the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC clash. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
