The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Wednesday evening despite a valiant effort, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 74-72. The game took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar slipped to 2-9 on the 2021-2022 campaign (0-2 CUNYAC), while CCNY improved to 5-6 overall, and 1-1 in league competition.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Mousa Sinera once again performed at an elite level, registering his seventh consecutive double-double by scoring a game-high 21 points and tying for the team high of 11 rebounds. Sinera converted on seven of his 10 attempts from the floor, and is now shooting 46.7 percent for the season. He also added a team-best three steals. Joshua Jean Pierre put forth another gritty effort, posting his second consecutive double-double with 10 points (5-11 FG) and 11 rebounds. He also contributed a pair of assists, two swatted shots, and two steals.

For CCNY, the Beavers were paced by Daniel Piszczatowski, as he scored a team-high 17 points while snatching 10 rebounds. He also tied for the game-high of three blocks, while registering three assists and a pair of steals. Amir Assani scored 15 points to go along with his game-high 15 rebounds, and it was Yassine Sakhi finalizing his evening with 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high of seven assists. Dashaun Galloway and Elijah Patterson each netted 10 points, as well.

In what was a high-intensity game from the start, CCNY raced out to early advantages of 6-0 and 10-2, and the Beavers held an edge as big as 11 points on three occasions during the opening session, but the Cougars grinded and stayed close, trailing by just five (39-34) as time expired on the opening half.

The Beavers started the second half on a 6-0 run thanks to a converted layups by Galloway and Sakhi, and a pair of drained freebees by Bayame Bah. CCNY later held an edge of 51-43 with 15:53 remaining, but the Cougars scored seven consecutive points over a span of 2:11 to slice their deficit to one point (51-50), with 13:42 left. That aforementioned run included a drilled free throw by Andre Evans Jr., a made layup by Prince-Malachi Reid, and consecutive baskets by Jean Pierre.

After a miniature 7-2 run by the Beavers put CCNY back up 58-52, Medgar Evers answered with a 10-1 run over a span of 3:02 to snatch a 62-59 lead. The Cougars would eventually go up by as many as five points (70-65), but the Beavers were able to stay poised and eventually tie the score, as Sakhi registered a three point basket with 1:35 left to knot the game at 72 apiece.

Later, with 38 seconds left and possession, the Cougars were unable to score to take the lead, as Sakhi collected the rebound. Once the Beavers made it into the front court, they fed the ball to Assani, who drove to the basket and converted on a layup with 0.4 remaining, a bucket that would prove to be the game-winner.

In what was primarily a game where both defenses shined, neither team shot over 40 percent, with CCNY hitting on just 31 of its 78 attempts from the floor (39.7 percent), and the Cougars converting on 32.9 percent of their shots (28-85). The teams combined to go 5-50 from downtown (CCNY 2-17, Medgar Evers 5-33), and free throw efficiency certainly played a role in outcome. The Beavers were 10-12 on the evening from the charity stripe (83.3 percent), while the Cougars drained just 50 percent of their freebees (11-22).

CCNY held a slight 58-53 edge on the glass, but Medgar Evers did a solid job winning the turnover battle, committing just 16 miscues while forcing 24 Beavers mistakes. CCNY collected 22 assists compared to 10 for the Cougars, but Medgar Evers held a 13-12 edge in the steals column.

The Cougars will return to action on Friday, as Medgar Evers will close out its three-game homestand against Baruch College in what will be another crucial CUNYAC contest. Start time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 7:00pm.
