Simmons' late heroics propel Cougars to victory over Bloodhounds

Box Score

The Medgar Evers College men's basketball team picked up a thrilling victory on Wednesday evening, defeating CUNYAC foe John Jay College by a score of 67-65 at the Doghouse in Manhattan. With the victory, the Cougars have now won two consecutive contests, improving to 4-10 overall in the process, and a mark of 1-4 in league play. The Bloodhounds, who are one season removed from capturing the CUNYAC regular season title, slipped to 4-9 on the season, and 2-2 in conference action.

In the triumph for Medgar Evers, Dante Simmons hit a game-winning three point basket with seven seconds remaining. Simmons, who has established himself as a versatile workhorse for the Cougars, paced his squad, registering a double-double with a team-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds. He also earned a pair of assists, as well. Dimitri Weeks added 15 points, a game-high six steals, five rebounds, and three assists, and point guard Andre Evans Jr. netted 13 points while collecting a game-high six assists.

Despite the loss for John Jay College, Angel Rivera notched a game-high 21 points to go along with four caroms and a pair of dimes. Jordan Evelyn scored 10 points on 4-7 shooting, hitting two three pointers and grabbing four rebounds. Isaac Holmes scored in double-figures with 13 points and was the team's leading rebounder with seven, and finally, it was Dan Kenny contributing nine points while snatching six boards.

The Cougars, who fell behind by 12 points (17-5) Monday evening against Pratt Institute before rallying to win, did the same thing on Wednesday evening, shaking off a 21-9 deficit in the early stages to eventually capture a victory. Medgar Evers sharpshooter Dimitri Weeks gave the Cougars their first lead in 16:31 when he drilled a shot from downtown with 2:04 left in the half to put Medgar Evers ahead 35-34. The Cougars added five more points from there to take a 40-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. In all, Medgar Evers outscored John Jay 31-13 over the final 12:26 of the opening stanza, yielding just five Bloodhound field goals during that spurt.

Medgar Evers eventually took a lead as large as eight points, before John Jay later used a spirited 20-6 run over a span of 7:53 to leapfrog back ahead by a score of 61-53 with 8:02 remaining

From there, the Cougars used remarkable defensive prowess to allow just one converted John Jay field goal over a span of 7:42 to pull to within one point, 65-64, with 20 seconds remaining. On the Cougars' final offensive possession of the evening, Simmons received a pass from Evans Jr. and confidently hoisted a three point basket, drilling it, putting Medgar Evers up 67-65 and sending the Cougars bench into a frenzy.

On John Jay's final possession, Corey Jones Jr's three-point attempt inside the last second fell short, giving the Cougars a much-needed first conference victory.

Medgar Evers shot 40.7 percent from the floor for the evening (24-59), while John Jay shot just a clip below, nailing 39.4 percent of its attempts (26-66). The Cougars converted on 52.6 percent of their freebees (10-19), while John Jay also misfired on nine free throw attempts (5-14, 35.7 percent). Medgar Evers tallied 10 steals to the Bloodhounds' nine, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 17 miscues and forcing 19 John Jay mistakes. The Bloodhounds held a modest 45-39 edge on the glass, while also registering 20 assists to Medgar Evers' 15.

The Cougars will look to make it three consecutive victories on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers returns to the Cougar Cave for a battle against Lehman College. Start-time for the CUNYAC clash is set for 7:00pm.
