The Medgar Evers men's basketball team put forth a valiant effort in attempting to secure a third consecutive victory, but the Cougars were ultimately denied, turned back by Lehman College by a score of 90-83 Friday evening at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar dipped to 4-11 on the year, and 1-5 in league play. The Lightning improved to 12-2 on the 2021-2022 campaign, and a record of 6-1 in CUNYAC action.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Dante Simmons continued his recent stellar play, registering a team-high 20 points, game-highs of four blocks and four steals, and eight rebounds. Junior Mousa Sinera netted 18 points, snatched seven boards, collected three assists and swatted two shots, and point guard Andre Evans Jr. contributed 14 points, a team-high seven assists, six rebounds, and three steals.

In the victory for Lehman College, Gian Batista was masterful, leading all players in three major columns, including points with 22, rebounds with 17, and assists with nine. The standout fell one assist short of a triple-double. Additionally, Marquese Johnson scored 18 points, grabbed five rebounds, and compiled four assists, and Mo Idrissou finalized his evening with 13 points and eight boards. Cesar Fernandez and Juan Fernandez netted 12 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Isaiah Geathers didn't play in the game (COVID-19 protocol).

Things looked promising for the home team for most of the opening stanza, as Medgar Evers held a 30-20 edge with 6:37 remaining in the session, and later, a 41-33 lead with 1:13 to go in the first half. The Lightning would close out the stanza strong, though, scoring the final seven points to pull to within one, 41-40, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers led 50-46 in the opening minutes of the second half, but Lehman used a ferocious 23-3 run over a span of 6:04 to catapult to a 69-53 advantage with 11:12 to play. That aforementioned edge would be the Lightning's largest lead of the evening, but the Cougars refused to go down quietly.

Over the ensuing 8:44 of regulation, Medgar Evers stormed back, allowing just four converted Lehman field goals during that time, and outscoring the Lightning 27-13 to get back to within two at 82-80 with 2:28 left. That would be the closest the Cougars would get, though, as Medgar Evers would score just three points the rest of the way, shooting 1-8 from the floor in the process, as Lehman would hold on for the victory.

Medgar Evers lost the game despite winning the turnover battle by a wide margin. The Cougars took care of the basketball very well, committing just 11 turnovers on the night while forcing 26 Lightning miscues. Lehman won the game due to their efficiency from the floor and its success rebounding the basketball. The Lightning converted on 33 of 63 attempts from the floor (52.4 percent), compared to just 36.1 percent conversion rate for Medgar Evers (30-83). Lehman College snatched 51 rebounds compared to 41 for the Cougars. The Lightning collected 23 assists to Medgar Evers' 15, and the Cougars had seven blocks to Lehman's four.

The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will take on Brooklyn College in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
