Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Cougars lose pair of non-conference matches against King's (PA) and Yeshiva

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team lost a pair of non-conference matches this past weekend, losing to the Lions of King's College (PA) by scores of 4-25, 5-25, and 9-25), before falling in four sets to Yeshiva University (25-23, 25-27, 16-25, 11-25). The matches took place at the King's College's McGrane Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre, PA. With the defeats, the Cougars slipped to 1-18 this season.

In the opener against the Lions, the Cougars weren't able to muster much of an attack against a solid King's College (PA) squad. Despite the loss, however, energetic newcomer Britonya Lloyd registered team-highs of two kills and five digs. Senior Cristal Joseph and freshman Jordan-Taylor Robinson contributed three digs apiece.

Following the Cougars' loss to the Lions, Medgar Evers played well in the opening set against the Maccabees, rallying back from 22-20 down in the first set to record five of the set's final six points and grab the win. After Yeshiva's Tali Miller committed a service error, Lloyd followed that up with a service ace to tie the set at 22-all. Joseph notched a kill to catapult the Cougars ahead 23-22, but an attack error by Lloyd knotted the set at 23 apiece. Medgar Evers would then capture the set with consecutive points, thanks to Yeshiva's Shany Elmaleh committing a setting error, and Joseph tallying a kill.

The Cougars seemed poise to take a 2-0 lead in sets, as Medgar Evers held a commanding 17-10 advantage in the second set, before the Maccabees stormed back to tie the set at 18-all. Later, Yeshiva held leads of 19-17, 21-19, and 24-22, before the Cougars would tie the set at 24 thanks to consecutive kills by Joseph and Quiara Brye Bey. Each club traded service errors, leaving the set tied at 25 apiece. Yeshiva then scored the final two points thanks to self-inflicted errors by the Cougars (an attack error by Robinson and a bad set by Shadeyah Aikens.

The third set appeared to be up for grabs, as Yeshiva was clinging to a 15-14 lead before scoring 10 of the final 12 points to win it, 25-16. The Maccabees then dominated the fourth and final set of the match, capturing it 25-11.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Medgar was led by Joseph, who had one of her finest performances of her career, notching a team-high 12 kills while hitting .333. She also added nine digs while tying for the team high of three service aces. Lloyd added nine kills, a team-high 11 digs, and three service aces, and Brye Bey posted a team-high nine assists.

In the victory for Yeshiva University, Elmaleh lead all players with 17 kills. She also piled 15 digs to go along with six service aces. Emily Zrihen notched 11 kills while tallying a match-high seven service aces, and Ashley Botnick finished with a match-high 20 digs.

The Cougars will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will play host to York College in the team's home finale. In addition, the Department of Athletics will take a few moments to honor graduating seniors Cristal Joseph and Cristina Carnegie in a special pre-match ceremony. Start-time for the clash against the Cardinals is set for 7:10pm, with the Senior Night ceremonies getting underway right at 7:00pm.
