Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars lose 3-0 to Panthers on rain-soaked evening in Purchase, NY

The Medgar Evers College men's soccer team lost a non-conference match on Monday evening, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase on a rainy evening by a score of 3-0. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 0-10 on the 2022 campaign. Meanwhile, the Panthers evened their record at 5-5.

SUNY Purchase's Marlon Matute dominated the match from start to finish, providing all of the offense on the evening with three goals. He scored the match's lone first half goal in the 19th minute, directing the ball into the net via a header to give his team a 1-0 advantage. Ethan Dillon rocketed a long ball from just about 30 yards to earn the helper on the goal. As time expired on the opening session, the Panthers held that same slim 1-0 edge.

Matute notched his second goal of the evening in the 72nd minute of play, capitalizing on a loose ball inside the box. He slashed a high shot into the right side of the net to catapult SUNY Purchase to a commanding 2-0 advantage. The standout registered the hat trick two minutes later, playing a carom off of Cougars goaltender Louis Caiola before blasting it into the upper portion of the goal. That would be the finally tally of the evening, as Purchase went on to capture the contest, 3-0.

Panthers goaltender Mario Olmedo recorded the shoutout on the evening, only needing to stop three shots in the process. His counterpart, the Cougars' Louis Caiola, made eight saves despite yielding the three goals.

SUNY Purchase held a commanding 27-7 edge in the shots category, while also earning six corner kick opportunities compared to one for Medgar Evers.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Randall's Island's No. 10 field to take on CUNYAC foe CCNY. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
