Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball team shows heart, grit in defeat at Lehman College

The Cougars women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference match on Thursday evening, falling to the Lightning of Lehman College by scores of 10-25, 17-25, and 22-25 at the APEX Center in the Bronx. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 1-12 on the year, while the Lightning won its third straight, improving to 4-8.

Britonya Lloyd paced the Cougars on Thursday evening, registering a match-high four kills while also contributing a pair of assists and earning a service ace. Veteran Cristal Joseph notched a team-best two service aces to go along with two kills, and Cristina Carnegie collected a team-high four assists while racking-up four digs and earning a pair of kills. Finally, it was Quiara Brye Bey finalizing her evening by tying for the match-high of seven digs, while also tallying two kills.

Leading the way for the hosts Daira Hernandez, as she hit .304 on the evening, finishing with match-highs of nine kills and five service aces. She also registered six digs. Selena Mitchell contributed six kills and five digs, and Andrea Alarcon finished with four kills, four service aces, three assists, and three digs. Finally, setter Heder Rodriguez notched a match-high 19 assists.

After Lehman captured the first set fairly convincingly, Medgar Evers made things interesting in set number two. After Lehman College jumped out to a 9-6 advantage, the Cougars scored four consecutive points, thanks to a kill from Lloyd, consecutive service aces by Joseph, and an attack error by Lehman's Sky Mercado. That gave Medgar Evers a 10-9 edge. The Lightning later led 13-12 before scoring six consecutive points to catapult ahead by the score of 19-12. That seven point deficit would be too much for the Cougars to overcome, and Lehman was triumphant in the second set, winning it by eight.

In the most tightly-contested set of the evening, Medgar Evers rallied back from deficits of 17-10, 19-13, and 22-15, and 24-18 to make it close. The Cougars, trailing by that aforementioned latter score of 24-18, ran off four straight points (one kill apiece by Brye Bey, Carnegie, and Jordan-Taylor Robinson, and an attack error by Lehman) to make it 24-22. The Lightning would finally close the match out, though, thanks to a kill by Lisbeth Perez.

Medgar Evers will now play three of its next four matches at the Cougars Cave, starting with Tuesday evening's CUNYAC clash with the CCNY Beavers. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
