Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball rallies from 10-point fourth quarter deficit to stun Panthers, 38-35, at Cougars Cave

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team picked up a thrilling victory in its home opener on Monday evening, defeating the Panthers of SUNY Old Westbury by a score of 38-35 in front of a fired-up crowd at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The win was Head Coach Rodney Carr's first in his Medgar Evers tenure, and it improved the Cougars to 1-1 on the young season. Old Westbury fell to 0-2 with the defeat.

In the victory for the Cougars, Medgar Evers was led by Sheily Quezada, as she scored a game-high 18 points while tying for the game-high of 12 rebounds. She also added a team-high four steals, go along with three swatted shots. Jennifer Metra knocked down seven of her 10 attempts from the line, finishing with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Camaya Sealy snatched 11 rebounds and picked up a pair of steals, and Chaniya Daughtry blocked a game-high five shots while snatching seven boards.

Nia Owens paced Old Westbury, nailing 10 of her 15 free throw attempts to finish with a team-high 16 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds and tied for the game-high of five steals. Melinda Harris scored seven points and snatched 12 boards while swiping three steals, and Tyela Davidson had five steals.

Medgar Evers took an early 5-2 advantage in the opening 1:37 of play thanks to a converted layup by Quezada and a triple by Mariam Gueye, but the Panthers outscored the home team 13-1 the remainder of the period to take a 15-6 advantage after one. In the second quarter, Quezada scored eight points, and the Cougars held Old Westbury to 1-19 shooting, as Medgar Evers outscored the visitors 12-4 in the period to slice Old Westbury's lead to one, 19-18, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, a drained jumper by Quezada gave the Cougars their first lead since early in the opening period, as Medgar jumped ahead 20-19. A 9-0 Panthers run, though, put Old Westbury ahead 28-20 with 4:08 remaining in the quarter. A Sealy jumper and free throw, and a pair of free throws by Metra pulled the Cougars within three at 28-25, but Old Westbury scored the final three points of the third to go up 31-25 as the teams headed into the final period.

Old Westbury took a 35-25 lead with seven minutes remaining, but a ferocious and spirited comeback by the Cougars would unfold. Metra would connect on a trifecta with 6:14 to go to make it 35-28, and 43 seconds later, Quezada converted on a layup to slice the Panthers lead to five at 35-30. After 2:42 of scoreless basketball, Metra drained two freebees to pull Medgar Evers within three (35-32) with 2:47 to go.

Later, with 2:05 left, Quezada's jumper pulled the Cougars to within a point, and Metra's jumper with 1:13 to go put Medgar Evers College ahead for good at 36-35. Quezada would drain another jumper with 40 seconds left to give the Cougars a 38-35 edge. Inside the final 26 seconds of regulation, Old Westbury would remarkably not only miss a potential game-tying three, but they'd also turn the ball over three times, as well, as Medgar Evers would hold on for a three-point victory.

This particular game will certainly not be remembered for its shooting by either squad, but it will be known for Medgar Evers' aggressive defense in the fourth quarter. Not only did the Cougars hold the Panthers to 0 field goals in the final 10 minutes of action, but Medgar would also force 11 Old Westbury turnovers in the period, as well.

For the game, Medgar Evers shot 21.5 percent (14-65) while holding the Panthers to a 16.7 percent conversion rate (11-66). The Cougars hit on 50 percent of their free throw attempts (8-16), while Old Westbury was dreadful from the line, hitting on just 12 of 30 attempts (40 percent).  Medgar Evers held a healthy 61-51 edge on the glass, while also swatting 11 shots compared to two for Old Westbury. The Cougars won the game despite committing 39 turnovers compared to 31 for the visitors, and both teams registered seven assists apiece.

The Cougars will return to the court on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to the Rams Gymnasium in Farmingdale, NY to battle Farmingdale State College. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
