Rams race past Cougars 68-37 in non-conference action

The Medgar Evers College women's basketball team lost a non-conference game on Wednesday evening, falling to the Rams of Farmingdale State by a score of 68-37. The game took place at the Walter A. Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars fell to 1-2 on the year, while the Rams recorded their first win, improving to 1-3.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Sheily Quezada registered her second consecutive double-double, scoring 10 points, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds, swatting a game-high four shots, and tallying a team-best seven steals. Jennifer Metra netted 10 points and snatched five boards, and Mariame Gueye finalized her evening with seven points, five caroms, and three steals.

Layla Mendoza led the way for the Rams, scoring a game-high 19 points, while snatching a team-high seven rebounds. Victoria Kantzian nailed three shots from beyond the arc, finalizing her evening with 12 points, and Erin Conte contributed 11 points, five steals, and four assists. Lissette Cordero finished with 10 points, and Monica Cordova and Emily Pohlaski tallied seven and six steals, respectively.

The Rams held a modest 10-6 advantage in the opening 5:28 of the first quarter before outscoring the Cougars 15-2 for the remainder of the period to snatch a 25-8 edge after the period. Farmingdale used that momentum to dominate the second quarter, scoring 20 of the period's 25 points to snatch a commanding 45-13 edge as time expired on the first half.

Farmingdale opened the second half with a three point conversion by Jenna Pignataro, before Mendoza and Conte each recorded layups. At that juncture of the contest, the Rams had their biggest lead of the evening, a 39-point advantage (52-13. For the remainder of the contest, Farmingdale's wouldn't lead by any less than 31 points, cruising to a pressure-free victory.

For the evening, Farmingdale converted on 39.2 percent of its attempts from the floor (29-74) while holding the Cougars to just a 24.6 percent conversion rate (14-57). The Rams won the turnover battle, committing 27 miscues while forcing 39 Medgar Evers errors, and Farmingdale also piled 16 assists to the Cougars' six. Medgar Ever did hold a slim margin on the glass, snatching 48 rebounds to the home team's 45.

The Cougars will now have two days off before traveling to Boston to play a pair of games. Medgar Evers will play Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at the Jean Yawkey Center (2pm), before returning to the court at noon Sunday to take on Bates College in the same arena in a neutral site contest.
