Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's basketball struggles in losses to Emmanuel, Bates

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at the Jean Yawkey Center in Massachusetts this weekend, falling to Emmanuel College by a score of 94-20 on Saturday afternoon, before losing to Bobcats of Bates College 89-36 earlier today. With the two defeats, the Cougars are now 1-4 on the season.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Jennifer Metra scored a team-high eight points while grabbing seven rebounds, tallying two assists, and registering two steals. Sheily Quezada added five points, seven boards, and two steals, as well.

For the Saints, every player that entered the game scored at least three points and recorded at least one basket. Yannie Chan led the way for Emmanuel, posting a double-double with 11 points, 10 assists, and four steals, and Cait Barker netted 11 points in just nine minutes of action. Reganne French, Angelina Giordano, and Megan Reilly all contributed 10 points apiece, with Reilly falling just short of a double-double by collecting nine boards. Finally, it was Tiffany Fischer finalizing her afternoon with nine points and seven rebounds.

The Saints led by a score of 34-9 after one period, and Emmanuel would allow just four Cougars field goals over the final three quarters to run away with the victory.

Emmanuel connected on 45.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (38-83) while holding Medgar Evers to a 17.4 percent conversion rate (8-46). The Saints out-rebounded the Cougars 58-33, while also forcing 41 Medgar turnovers, and committing just 15 of their own.

In the Cougars' defeat to Bates, Quezada put forth a fantastic effort, connecting on seven of her 16 attempts and finishing with game-highs of 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four swatted shots. Mariam Gueye also contributed nine points, and Camaya Sealy and Jennifer Metra pulled down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Alyson Kennedy led the way for the Bobcats, scoring a team-high 12 points (5-8 FG) while snatching four boards and adding three assists. Meghan Graff contributed 11 points, two assists, and two steals, and Sophie Spolter posted a double-double with 11 points, a game-high 10 steals, none rebounds, and a game-high eight assists.

The Bobcats established their dominance early in this game, racing out to a 9-0 advantage in the opening 4:56. After Sealy converted on a layup to make it 9-2, a 15-0 run by Bates made it 24-2 Bobcats. Bates led 26-4 after one quarter, and 42-17 at the break. The Bobcats kept the pressure on in the second half, gradually building their lead to 55 points, before winning by 53.

Bates College connected on 45.6 percent of its attempts for the afternoon (36-89) while holding the Cougars nailed just 27.8 percent of theirs (15-54). The Bobcats out-rebounded the Cougars 53-33, while also committing just 13 turnovers while forcing 30 for the visitors. The Cougars swatted five shots to Bates' four.

The Cougars will return to action next Sunday, as they'll take on Pratt Institute as part of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Invitational. The game will tip off at 2:00pm at the Cougars Cave. The day before, Pratt and York will play a neutral site game at the Cougars Cave (2pm), also as part of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Invitational.
