Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cougars stay unbeaten at home with a gritty 56-49 victory over Cannoneers

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team (2-4 overall) stayed unbeaten at home, defeating Pratt Institute by a score of 56-49 at the Cougars Cave on Sunday afternoon. The game served as the second and final contest of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Women's Basketball Memorial Invitational. The Cannoneers, who lost to York College yesterday on day one of the invitational, fell to 0-8 with the two losses this weekend.

Leading the way for the Cougars was freshman Sheily Quezada, as the freshman continued to dominate her first season at Medgar Evers, posting her fourth double-double in six games with game-highs of 21 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocks. She also collected four steals, as well. Mariam Gueye knocked down a pair of three-point baskets, finishing with 12 points, eight boards, and five assists, and point guard Jennifer Metra added 10 points, game-highs of seven assists and five steals, and five rebounds. Finally, it was Camaya Sealy putting together a strong all-around game, scoring nine points, grabbing 14 rebounds, tallying three assists, and adding two steals.

Kylie Grant scored 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds, swiped five steals and registered four assists to pace the Cannoneers. Kinako Miyake drained four triples, snatched seven caroms and dished out four assists. Almudena Valenzuela added six points, and Rohama Tewodros collected nine rebounds.

The Cougars were slow out of the gate in today's matinee, trailing 9-2 just 4:18 into the contest. Pratt's Grant accounted for eight of those nine points. Medgar Evers charged back to outscore the Cannoneers 15-4 for the remainder of the period to take a 17-13 lead after one quarter of play. Gueye played a big role in pacing that aforementioned spurt by the Cougars, draining two triples and scoring six points.

Pratt started the second quarter with a 12-4 run to catapult ahead by a score of 25-21, but the Cougars closed the period on a 9-0 run to grab a 30-25 lead as the teams entered the locker room at halftime. That run included a pair of converted freebees by Metra, a drained jumper by Gueye, and five straight points from Quezada.

Medgar Evers went up by as many as nine in the third quarter, and eventually took a 44-35 edge into the fourth. After leading by 10 on two occasions in the final period, Pratt Institute closed to within five (52-47) on a made jumper by Grant with 2:26 to go. The Cougars' defense would shut down the Cannoneers from there, allowing just a meaningless Pratt layup at the buzzer, as Medgar held on to win 56-49.

Neither team shot the basketball particularly well today, but Medgar Evers was more efficient in that category, connecting on 32.4 percent of its attempts from the floor (22-68), while holding Pratt to a 27.3 percent conversion rate (18-66). The Cougars dominated the glass, pulling down 57 rebounds to 44 for the visitors. Medgar Evers piled 15 assists while the Cannoneers had 10, and Medgar Evers won the turnover battle slightly, committing 19 miscues while forcing 21 Pratt mistakes.

The Cougars will now have four days off before returning to the court on Friday evening, as Medgar Evers will welcome York College into its building for the first CUNYAC contest of the new season. Start-time at the Cougars Cave is scheduled for 6:00pm.
