Cardinals dominate second half, deal Cougars first home defeat, 76-53

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost at the Cougars Cave for the first time this season, suffering a 76-53 defeat to CUNYAC foe York College on Friday evening. With the loss, the Cougars are now 2-5 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-1 CUNYAC), while the surprising Cardinals improved to 5-2 with the victory (1-0 CUNYAC).

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, freshman Sheily Quezada dazzled once again, posting game-highs 26 points (10-19 FG) and six blocks while also snatching seven boards and adding three steals. She currently sits atop the conference with a total of 23 swatted shots. Mariame Gueye scored all 14 of her points in the second half, connecting on two trifectas in the process, and Jennifer Metra put forth a versatile effort, scoring nine points, snatching a team-high eight rebounds, and swiping a game-high six steals. 

Leading the way for the victorius Cardinals was Ellma Hodzic, as she scored 18 points (8-of-18 FG, 2-of-4 3FG), piled eight dimes, collected five boards, swatted four shots, and added three steals. Imani Gibson recorded a team-high 20 points (9-of-12 FG) and 13 rebounds (five offensive). Mac-Dege Dessources finalized her evening with 16 points (7-of-10 FG), a game-high 14 rebounds, and four blocks. Kristina Sierra added 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one swatted shot, and finally, Alicia Gumbs contributed eight points, seven assists, and four steals. 

After leading by as many as eight points in the opening quarter (13-5), the Cardinals held a 20-14 advantage after 10 minutes of action. Later, York held a 30-22 edge, before Medgar Evers closed the half strong, going on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 32 apiece as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Medgar Evers opened the second half by outscoring the Cardinals 7-3 to snatch a 39-35 advantage with 7:53 left in the third. York responded with a ferocious 17-0 spurt to grab a 13-point lead, which was the Cardinals' biggest edge of the game (52-39) at that juncture. From there, the Cardinals would hold a double-digit lead for the final 10:29, as York's lead ballooned to as many as 24 points, before the visitors solified a 23-point win.

York College was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, especially in the second half. The Cardinals converted on 54.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the final 20 minutes (19-35), and 48.6 percent for the game overall (34-70). Meanwhile, York's stiff defense held the Cougars to 32.2 percent (20-of-62 FG) shooting. York dominated the glass (52-31) and the assists category (23-6), while also holding slim edges in the steals (13-12) and swatted shots (10-8) columns. The Cougars did win the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues while forcing 27 mistakes for the opposition.

Medgar Evers will now have five days off before returning to the court on Thursday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the Rangers of Drew University to the Cougars Cave. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 6:00pm.
