Quezada scores game-high 20 points as Cougars fall to Drew University

The Medgar Evers women's basketball team lost a non-conference game on Thursday evening, falling to the Rangers of Drew University by a score of 96-36. The contest took place at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 2-6 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while Drew University improved to a stellar 9-1 mark.

Sheily Quezada put together another great effort despite Medgar's loss, as she scored a game-high 20 points while tying for the game-high of eight rebounds. She also contributed four steals, two assists, and two swatted shots. Mariame Gueye finalized her evening with eight points, three boards, and a pair of assists, and Jennifer Metra added six rebounds and four steals.

Joey Meyers led the Rangers with a team-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals. Madelyn Morgan tallied 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go with four steals. Kyra Mann scored 11 points, and Ryane Wood also reached double figures with 10 points. Beth Dobrich contributed eight rebounds, and Izzy Lalo dished out seven assists. Finally it was Gianna Pica adding five steals.

The Rangers outscored Medgar Evers 32-5 in the first quarter, and expanded their edge to 59-21 at halftime. Drew then outscored the Cougars 23-11 in the third period. Drew was extremely efficient throughout the opening 30 minutes of action, as the Rangers nailed over 60 percent of their attempts from the floor in each of the first three periods. Drew's defensive prowess was on display in the fourth, as the Cougars were only able to muster four points in the final 10 minutes.

Drew connected on 57.4 percent of its shots from the floor for the evening (39-68), while the Cougars connected on just 25 percent of their attempts (14-56). The Rangers held a 44-35 edge on the boards, while also swiping 21 steals to Medgar's 10. Drew was very opportunistic on the evening, netting 42 points off 30 Cougar turnovers, and the Rangers also piled 28 assists compared to six for the hosts.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel Ramapo College's Bradley Center in Mahwah, NJ to take on the Roadrunners. Start-time for the non-conference clash is scheduled for 5:30pm.
