Men's basketball splits pair of games in Massachusetts over the weekend

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team split a pair of games this weekend in Massachusetts, defeating the Lynx of Lesley University at Medford High School by a score of 75-71, before falling to the Bulldogs of Dean College 96-70 at the Pieri Gymnasium. With the output, the Cougars are now 1-3 on the 2022-2023 campaign.

In the Cougars' victory over Lesley, senior Mousa Sinera posted his second consecutive double-double, scoring 11 points while snatching a game-high 15 rebounds. Dimitri Weeks put together another nice all-around performance, contributing team-highs of 13 points, four assists, and two steals. He also collected five boards, as well. Freshman Nicholas Bocharov connected on three triples, finishing with 10 points on the evening, and Dante Simmons added 10 points (4-5 FG) and four rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Lynx, Christian Castro was electric, scoring a game-high 28 points, draining 10 of his 15 attempts from the floor in the process. He also collected five boards, as well. DJ Alexander finished with eight points and three caroms, and Scott Barlow and Tarell Joseph finished with seven points apiece.

Medgar Evers' first half was solid on both sides of the floor. The Cougars shot 45.2 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes (14-31), including a 54.5 percent conversion rate on shots from long range (6-11). Medgar also drained 70 percent of its shots from the line (7-10). Defensively, the Cougars allowed just nine Lesley field goals in the opening session (9-27, 33 percent for the Lynx). The Cougars shut out the hosts for the final 3:25 of the first half, taking a 41-25 edge into the locker room at halftime.

The Cougars held a commanding 17 point edge (64-47), which was its biggest lead of the game, with 6:43 to go. Lesley University refused to go quietly, though, using a 21-9 run over the ensuing 5:44 to pull to within five points (73-68) with 59 seconds remaining. Medgar Evers was able to weather the late Lynx surge, though, allowing just one more field goal for the hosts the rest of the way to hang on for a four point victory.

For the game, Medgar Evers shot just a shade under 50 percent, hitting on 26 of its 53 attempts from the floor (49.1 percent), while holding Lesley to a 42.4 percent conversion rate (25-59). The Cougars dominated on the glass, grabbing 44 caroms while Lesley collected only 21 boards. The Lynx registered 11 assists to Medgar's eight, and the turnover battle was won by the Lynx, who committed 15 miscues while forcing 21 Cougar mistakes.  

In Sunday's loss to Dean College, Isaiah Brodie led the way for the Cougars, scoring a team-high 15 points (7-9 FG) while snatching five rebounds. Mousa Sinera connected on five of his six attempts from the floor to finish with 12 points and four rebounds, and AJ Evans finalized his afternoon with nine points. Veteran Dante Simmons scored six points while grabbing seven rebounds.

For the Bulldogs, Mark Blair was nearly perfect shooting the basketball on the day, hitting eight of his nine attempts from the floor, while also nailing both of his free throw attempts, to finish with a game-high 18 points. He also tied for the game-high of eight rebounds, while posting game-highs of nine assists and three steals. AJ Weston finalized his afternoon with 14 points and four rebounds, and Nick Grant and Jakobi Greenleaf scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. 

Dean College raced out to an early 17-4 advantage in the opening 6:26 of action, and gradually built its lead to 25 before taking a commanding 50-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs powered their way to a lead as large at 39 points, before a late Cougars run made the score respectable. Dean advanced for a 26-point triumph when the final buzzer sounded.

The Cougars lost the game despite shooting 52.7 percent from the floor (29-55), while the Bulldogs also shot the ball well, converting on 49.4 percent of their shots (41-83). Dean held a slim 38-37 edge on the glass, but the Bulldogs took care of the basketball much better, committing just eight miscues while forcing 29 mistakes for the visitors.

Medgar Evers will now have seven days off before returning to action on Monday evening, November 28th, as the Cougars will travel to Morristown, NJ to take on the Golden Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
