Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball rallies from 13 points down to stun Golden Eagles, 69-67

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team picked up an impressive victory on Monday evening, battling back from a 13-point first half hole to rally and defeat the Golden Eagles of Saint Elizabeth University by a score of 69-67. The game took place at Saint Joseph Hall in Morristown, NJ. With the victory, the Cougars are now 2-3 on the season, while the Golden Eagles slipped to 1-5.

Veteran Dante Simmons led the way for Medgar Evers, posting a double-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds, three swatted shots, and three assists. Mousa Sinera notched his third double-double of the 2022-2023 campaign, netting 14 points (5-10 FG, 4-4 FT) to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds and three steals. Dimitri Weeks contributed 14 points and two dimes, and Andre Evans contributed 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Despite the loss for Saint Elizabeth University, Nate Thompson paced the Golden Eagles, scoring 16 points while snatching 13 boards and swiping a pair of steals. D'Angelo Blackmond registered a double-double as well, netting 13 points, grabbing 14 rebounds, tallying two steals, and adding a pair of assists, and Yamere Diggs finalized his evening with 11 points (3-5 3pt-FG) and three steals.

The Golden Eagles raced out to a 7-0 edge just 4:20 into the game, and the Cougars didn't convert on their first field goal until 14:24 remaining in the opening half when Evans converted on a layup. Later, a drained Evans jumper would pull Medgar Evers to within a point at 11-10, but the Golden Eagles responded with an 11-0 run to catapult ahead by a score of 22-10.

Saint Elizabeth University's biggest lead of the game was 13 points, and they led by that aforementioned margin twice in the opening session, the latter of those instances being a 31-18 advantage with 2:45 left in the half. The Cougars would close the session strong, though, going on a 7-0 run to pull to within six, 31-25, as the teams entered the locker room at halftime. That spurt featured two buckets and a made free throw by Simmons, and another hoop from Weeks.

In the second half, the Golden Eagles led by double digits again, 48-38, with 12:45 remaining, but a ferocious 20-4 Medgar Evers run over a span of 7:06 put the Cougars ahead 58-52 with 7:45 left.

Saint Elizabeth would refuse to wilt, though, putting together an 11-4 run to snatch the lead back, 63-62, with 3:00 to play. The teams would then exchange the lead three more times for the remainder of the game, with the final pendulum swing coming when Sinera converted on a layup with 36 seconds to go to put the Cougars ahead for good (68-67).

The Golden Eagles were 0-for-5 from the field inside the final 36 seconds, and failed to register another point, as Medgar Evers held on for the hard-fought road win.

Medgar Evers was the more efficient team shooting the basketball, knocking down 37.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (25-67) compared to a 31.3 percent conversion rate for Saint Elizabeth University (24-76). The Cougars won the contest despite shooting a woeful 18-34 from the line (52.9 percent), yet, the Golden Eagles didn't fare much better at the charity stripe, nailing just 11 of 20 (55 percent). Saint Elizabeth University held a slim 58-53 advantage on the glass, while also tallying 11 steals to the Cougars' eight. Medgar Evers did win the turnover battle, committing just 16 while forcing 20 Golden Eagles errors.

The Cougars will return to the court on Wednesday evening, as they'll welcome the Panthers of SUNY Purchase to the Cougars Cave for a non-conference game. Start-time is scheduled for 7:00pm. Should Medgar Evers win, it would mark their best six game start in 10 years (the Cougars started 4-2 during the 2012-2013 campaign.)
