Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite strong effort (47.5 percent shooting), Cougars drop heartbreaker to Panthers, 92-85

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss on Wednesday evening, falling to the Panthers of SUNY Purchase by a score of 92-85 in front of solid crowd at the Cougars Cave. With the loss, Medgar slipped to 2-4 on the 2022-2023 campaign, while SUNY Purchase evened its record at 3-3.

Jacob Green put forth the best game of his freshman campaign, dazzling by knocking down seven of 15 attempts from the floor and finishing with 19 points. He also grabbed six rebounds, piled four dimes, and registered a steal. Dimitri Weeks, who entered the evening as the team's leading scorer, once again led the Cougars in that category, scoring 20 points while adding a pair of rebounds and two steals. It was business as usual for Mousa Sinera, as the senior recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 18 points (8-10 FG) and a team-high 13 boards, and it was Dante Simmons adding 11 points and five Caroms.

For SUNY Purchase, Matthew Phillips put together a dominating performance, as he knocked down 14 of 24 attempts from the floor to finish with a game-high 31 points. His 14 rebounds also led all players. Mark Morgan drained three trifectas on his way to finishing with 19 points, three assists, three steals, and two boards, and Rashid Nikiema added 13 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high four steals. Trey Skeete and Elijah Holmes contributed nine points apiece.

In a game that stayed close throughout, and was played at the pace of a track meet, neither team took more than a five point lead until the latter stages of the first half, when SUNY Purchase closed the session on an 11-2 run to take a 51-42 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, trailing 53-45, Medgar Evers used an 8-0 run over a span of 1:37 to knot the game at 53 apiece. That aforementioned run featured a converted jumper by Weeks, a driving layup by Green, and a pair of made freebees and a jumper by Sinera. The teams battled back and forth over the next 4:48 of action, scoring 10 points apiece, before the Cougars put together a 7-0 run to catapult ahead by the score of 70-63 with 9:51 remaining in the game.

The Panthers refused to let the game get away, as SUNY Purchase responded with an 8-1 run over the next 1:17 to tie the game at 71-all. The ensuing 2:38 saw the Cougars take multiple three-point leads (74-71 and 76-73), and also featured SUNY Purchase grabbing an advantage (79-78), before Weeks nailed a three point basket to put the Cougars back up a pair at 81-79.

After a pair of Isaac Johnson free throws tied the game at 81, Cougars freshman Richar Frias would drain two free throws to put Medgar back up 83-81 with 5:42 to go. Unfortunately, the Cougars went ice cold from the field from this point forward, shooting just one-for-nine the rest of the way. SUNY Purchase would outscore Medgar Evers 11-2 down the stretch to account for its seven point victory.

Both teams shot very well from the floor, with Medgar Evers connecting on 29 of its 61 attempts (47.5 percent), while the Panthers converted on 41.5 percent of their shots (34-82). The Cougars nailed 20 of their 27 freebees (74.1 percent), while SUNY Purchase missed 10 shots from the line (16-26, 61.5 percent). The Panthers held a healthy 48-38 advantage on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues while forcing 29 Cougars mistakes.

Medgar Evers will look to shake off a second consecutive tough home loss on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome the winless Cardinals of York College into the Cougars Cave for the first CUNYAC contest of the 2022-2023 season. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
