Cougars convert just 23 field goals in 81-58 loss to York College

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team is still searching for its first victory at the Cougars Cave (0-3), as the Cougars fell to the Cardinals of York College by a score of 81-58 on Friday evening. With the loss, Medgar is now 2-5 on the 2022-2023 campaign while the Cardinals registered their first win, improving to 1-7.

Freshman sharpshooter Jacob Green led the Cougars, recording team-highs of 15 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Dante Simmons added 11 points and seven rebounds, and senior Mousa Sinera added nine points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Finally, it was freshman Richar Frias (3-4 FG) scoring six points and grabbing three rebounds. 

Terrell Fullerton scored a game-high 17 points (7-of-15 FG) to go along with nine rebounds, eight assists, two steals, and a block to lead the Cardinals. Matthew Trepeta nailed four trifectas, finishing with 16 points to go along with three assists and two steals. Devine Chisholm netted 12 points (3-of-6 from downtown), snatched seven rebounds, tallied four assists, and swiped two steals. William Brown recorded 12 points, six rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block. And Finally, it was Olawale Kila grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds while scoring nine points. 

Things looked promising early for the Cougars, as Medgar raced out to a 10-4 lead in the opening 5:39 of the contest. York would respond with a strong 14-2 run to snatch an 18-12 edge with 8:41 remaining in the opening session. The Cardinals would also hold a six point lead at the half, 30-24.

York's efficiency shooting the basketball in the opening 10:52 of the second half allowed the Cardinals to take a 53-41 lead. Using solid shooting from downtown, York built its lead to 24 points (67-43) with 6:33 remaining in the contest. The Cardinals took their biggest lead of the game (28 points, 75-47) after Fullerton drained a triple with 3:33 left. 

For the evening, York connected on 43.8 percent (32-of-73) of its shots from the field, while the Cougars were only able to drain 23 of their 74 shots all evening (31.1 percent conversion rate). The Cardinals nailed 19 three point shots compared to seven for Medgar Evers, and York held a 50-43 edge on the glass. York also held advantages in the assists (20-14) and steals (10-6) columns, but Medgar Evers did swat six shots compared to the Cardinals' three.

Medgar Evers will now have seven days off before returning to the court on Saturday, December 10th, as the Cougars will take to the road to battle Valley Forge University. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 2:00pm.
