Kangaroos erase 20-point halftime deficit to shock Medgar Evers, 89-85

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered a stunning loss on Thursday evening, relinquishing a 20-point halftime deficit and falling to the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a score of 89-85 at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The game was played as part of the third-ever Dr. Carol V. DeCosta/Go 4 the Goal Tournament. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 3-6 on the season, while the Kangaroos won for just the third time in 13 tries, improving to 3-10.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, sophomore guard Andre Evans Jr. scored a team-high 22 points, while also posting game-highs of eight assists and five steals. He also snatched three boards, as well. Senior Dimitri Weeks added 17 points, seven assists, and a game-high six steals, and freshman Richar Frias netted 13 points (5-6 FG, 2-2 FT) while contributing three dimes, two steals, and a pair of rebounds. Joshua Jean-Pierre scored nine points, and Mousa Sinera grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

For SUNY Canton, Quran DuBois led all players with 28 points, 26 of which remarkably came in a dazzling second half performance. He also added seven rebounds and four assists. Brennan Harmer and Juztin Chambers-Phillips tallied 15 points and five assists apiece. Harmer snatched seven rebounds and tallied four steals, while Chambers-Phillips grabbed five boards. JJ Omaga tallied 12 points, and it was Fadil Atcha-Dedji grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Kangaroos raced out to an early 8-0 lead behind four points from Harmer and an emphatic dunk from Fadil Atcha-Dedji. Canton extended its lead to as many as 10 (16-6), before a 21-0 Medgar Evers run catapulted the Cougars to a 27-16 edge nine minutes into the contest. That aforementioned run was highlighted by the stellar and intense play of Evans Jr., who scored 10 points during the spurt.

Medgar Evers never led by less than nine points for the remainder of the half, eventually finishing the session on a 9-0 run to take a commanding 50-30 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Cougars still led by 16 points nearly five minutes into the second half, but SUNY Canton stormed back with a 14-4 run to get to within six points, 62-56, with 12:11 remaining in the contest.

Later, SUNY Canton took its first lead of the second half with 6:04 to play after Chambers-Phillips connected on a three-pointer.

Trailing by three with 4:23, the Kangaroos scored seven straight points, including five from DuBois, to snatch an 84-80 edge with 2:33 to go. Evans Jr. knocked down a three with 1:55 remaining, before DuBois hit two free throws to give Canton an 86-83 lead with 31 seconds left.

Andre Evans Jr. and Harmer each split a pair of free throws before Evans Jr. split another trip to the line to cut the Canton lead to two with 21 seconds left. After a Canton turnover, JJ Omaga blocked Evans Jr.'s potential game-tying Cougar jumper with 10 seconds left. Omaga then proceeded to split a pair of freebees, before coming up with a steal, before knocking down one more free throw with 0.3 seconds left to solidify the win for his squad.

The Kangaroos were the more efficient team from the field, connecting on 45.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (28-61), compared to a 43.2 percent conversion rate for the hosts (32-74). SUNY Canton held a 47-41 edge on the boards, while also tallying 21 assists to Medgar Evers' 20. The Cougars did win the turnover battle, committing 23 miscues while the Kangaroos racked-up 34 mistakes. Medgar Evers held a respectable 23-11 edge in the steals column.

Prior to the Cougars' loss to the Kangaroos, Saint John Fisher had held off Misericordia in a classic contest, 84-82. That means that Medgar Evers will play in the tournament's consolation game on Friday at 1:00pm against Misericordia. That'll be followed by Saint John Fisher and SUNY Canton clashing for the tournament championship at 3:00pm.
