In battle of the Cougars, Misericordia University tops Medgar Evers, 86-81

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team suffered its second straight defeat on Friday afternoon, losing to Misericordia University by a score of 86-81 at the Cougars Cave in Brooklyn, NY. The game served as the consolation contest of the the third-ever Dr. Carol V. DeCosta/Go 4 the Goal Tournament. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 3-7 on the season, while Misericordia improved to 6-5.

Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, Dimitri Weeks led his squad with a team-high 20 points. He also added two assists, as well. Richar Frias and Dante Simmons contributed nine points and four rebounds apiece, and Joshua Jean-Pierre added eight points and six boards. Finally, it was Mousa Sinera netting seven points and snatching seven rebounds.

Pacing Misericordia was Joseph Baldachino, as he connected on six shots from long range, and eight of his 15 attempts overall, to finish with a game-high of 26 points. He also grabbed 11 rebounds and tallied four assists, as well. Nick Hornung also posted a double-double, registering 20 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Derek Smith connected on five triples to finish with 16 points. Nick Prociak added 12 points, six caroms, and four dimes, and RJ Weise piled 10 boards and seven assists.

Misericordia needed only 2:32 to race out to a quick 12-2 advantage. That quick start was highlighted by Smith's three trifectas. Medgar Evers would respond impressively, going on a 15-2 run over a span of 5:39 to jump out to a 17-14 edge. Weeks scored five points during that run, and Evans Jr., Jacob Green, and Emmanuel Adenekan all connected on shots from long range, as well. Misericordia would once again go on a big run, scoring 12 consecutive points to go up 26-17 with 8:49 left in the half. 

Later, the teams found themselves knotted at scores of 30-30, 35-35, and 40-40, before Medgar Evers would snatch a 42-40 advantage as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Medgar held a slim 60-57 lead with 12:17 to go before going on a 12-4 run to snatch a 72-61 advantage. Misericordia's Kreitzer would then hit a three-pointer, and that was followed by Hornung converting on a pair of free throws. Baldachino then connected on back-to-back three-pointers as Misericordia pulled even, 72-72, with 6:09 to go.

The teams traded buckets over the next four minutes before Hornung's jumper put MU in front, 79-77, with 2:15 remaining. Kreitzer, Baldachino, Smith and Hornung combined for seven free throws over the final 1:48 to seal the victory for Misericordia.

The teams shot nearly an identical percentage from the floor, with Misericordia hitting on 42 percent of its shots (29-69), compared to a 41.9 percent conversion rate for Medgar Evers (31-74). With three players in double figures in rebounding, Misericordia dominated the glass, snatching 51 boards as a team, while the hosts collected 35. Misericordia piled 27 assists, while Medgar had 18, and the hosts won the turnover battle, committing just eight miscues, while the visitors had 15.

Following the game, it was announced that Medgar Evers' Weeks earned a spot on the All-Tournament team, as the senior averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 assists, and three steals over two tournament contests.

Medgar Evers will now break for the new year before returning to action on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the Hunter College Sportsplex to battle the Hawks in a CUNYAC contest. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 7:00pm.
