Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars score season-high 90 points, but ultimately lose to Hawks in CUNYAC action

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team scored a season-high 90 points on Tuesday evening, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars dropped a CUNYAC contest to the Hunter College Hawks by a score of 103-90. The game took place at the Hunter Sportsplex in Midtown, Manhattan. With the defeat, the Cougars have now dropped three straight games, leaving them at 3-8 on the year (0-2 CUNYAC). The Hawks, after starting 1-7, are now 4-8 (1-1 CUNYAC).

Three Cougars scored 18 points or more, including senior Dimitri Weeks. Weeks finished with a team-high 22 points while tying for the game-high of seven assists. He also snatched three boards while tallying two steals. Mousa Sinera put forth a vintage effort, posting a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 24 rebounds. He also tied Weeks for the game-high in assists with seven, while also leading all players with five steals. Sophomore Andre Evans Jr. netted 18 points while adding two rebounds and a pair of steals, and Joshua Jean Pierre connected on five of his six attempts from the floor to finish with 11 points (he also contributed six boards and four assists, as well).

Ryan Lau put forth an incredible effort for Hunter College, as he connected on nine of his 14 attempts from the floor, including seven of 11 from downtown, to finish with a game-high 31 points. He also nailed six of his eight attempts from the line, grabbed four rebounds, and collected three steals. Devon Matthews contributed 18 points, nine rebounds, and four assists, and the third and final Hawk to reach double figures, Ernie Parada, finished with 11 points. Luka Jakic narrowly missed registering a double-double, and he finalized his evening with nine points, a team-high 14 rebounds, three assists, and three steals.

In what was a relatively close game for the first 35 minutes of the evening, neither team took a double-digit lead in the first half. The largest advantage for either squad was nine points, which Hunter College owned (29-20) with 8:59 remaining in the opening session. The Cougars had sliced that deficit to two points on three different occasions throughout the remainder of the first half, before the Hawks eventually settled for a six-point edge (47-41) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

It looked as though Hunter was going to pull away early in the second half, as the Hawks built a 63-51 lead with 15:43 remaining, but Medgar Evers refused to go away. Over the ensuing 4:13, the Cougars put together an 18-7 run to pull to within a point at 70-69. Evans was fantastic during the spurt, scoring seven of those points, knocking down a trey in the process.

Later, with the game still very much up for grabs and the Hawks holding on to an 85-78 lead with 6:42 left, the Hawks finally pulled away, putting together a 13-3 run over a span of 3:52 to extend their lead to 17 (98-81) and put the game away.

The Hawks shot 43.2 percent from the floor (38-88), while the Cougars were just a cut below, converting on 41.4 percent of their attempts (36-87). Hunter held a slim 56-54 edge on the glass, while also winning the turnover battle, committing 27 miscues while Medgar Evers uncharacteristically had 30.

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Friday evening, as the Cougars will welcome to the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College into the Cougars Cave for a CUNYAC Battle of Brooklyn. The Cougars, who are currently 0-5 at home, will look to avoid dropping their first six contests in their own building, something they haven't done in eight seasons (2014-2015). Start-time for the game is scheduled for 8:00pm.
