Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars continue to search for rhythm at home following losses to Brooklyn College, Eastern Nazarene

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team continues to search for answers at home, as the Cougars lost a pair of games in their own gymnasium over the past few days, falling to CUNYAC foe Brooklyn College 69-56 on Friday evening, before being turned back 93-77 by the Lions of Eastern Nazarene on Saturday. With those setbacks, Medgar Evers is now 3-10 on the 2022-2023 campaign (0-3 CUNYAC). Brooklyn College improved to 3-10 (1-2 CUNYAC), and Eastern Nazarene is now 7-8.

Leading the way for the Cougars in their defeat was sharpshooter Jacob Green, as he nailed five trifectas and finished with a game-high 20 points. He also collected six rebounds while tallying a pair of assists. Senior Dimitri Weeks connected on three shots from long range, finalizing his evening with 11 points, two steals, and a pair of assists, and big man Emmanuel Adenekan dropped in seven points while snatching two rebounds, tallying two dimes, and swatting a pair of shots.

For the Bulldogs, Kayin Olajide scored a team-high 17 points and nearly registered a double-double, grabbing nine boards. Elisha Park added 16 points while snatching nine rebounds, and Serge Thraysbule chipped in 12 points and pulled down six boards. Finally, it was Franz Depra finalizing his evening with 10 points, knocking down a pair of trifectas in the process.  He also tallied five dimes while registering three steals.

Medgar Evers led 18-13 with 7:27 remaining in the opening session, but the Bulldogs regained momentum, putting together a ferocious 14-0 run that catapulted Brooklyn to a 27-18 advantage with 1:51 to go in the half. Brooklyn held a slim 27-21 edge as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

The Bulldogs took their biggest lead of the game, a 40-26 edge, when Depra nailed a three-point shot with 16 minutes left in the conference clash. Over the next 10 minutes, though, Medgar Evers would outscore its Bedford Avenue foe 28-15 to slice its deficit to one point, 55-54, with 5:22 showing on the clock.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, they would shoot one-for-10 from the floor and score just two points the rest of the way. Brooklyn netted 14 of the final 16 points of the evening, going on to defeat the Cougars in the crucial CUNYAC contest by 13 points.

In what was a fairly low-scoring conference contest, the Bulldogs were very efficient from the floor, connecting on 29 of their 59 attempts (49.2 percent) for the evening. On the flip side, Medgar Evers struggled, earning just a 34.8 percent conversion rate for the night (23-for-66). Brooklyn held a slim 40-36 edge on the glass, while also swatting five shots to the Cougars' four. The Bulldogs won the turnover battle (committing 14 to the host's 19), and both squads registered 10 steals apiece.

After falling to Brooklyn, the Cougars returned to the court about 15 hours later to take on Eastern Nazarene College. Despite losing the Lions, four Medgar Evers players scored in double figures, including Dante Simmons, as he scored a team-high 16 points, recorded a game-high five steals, and grabbed five rebounds. Weeks added 15 points, three boards, and three dimes, and Green connected on four triples, finishing with 14 points, a pair of rebounds, and two assists. Veteran Joshua Jean-Pierre finalized his afternoon with 10 points and five caroms.

The Lions were paced by Levi White, who was tremendously efficient at the free throw line, nailing 13 of his 15 attempts there, as well as five of his 10 shots from the floor, to finish with a game-high 23 points. He also tied for the game-high of eight boards, while contributing two dimes and two steals. Bernie McGuinness added 17 points (7-12 FG), eight rebounds, and three assists, and Nick Manso finalized his afternoon with 13 points, two caroms, two assists, and a pair of steals. Finally, it was JaWuan Moore and Isaac Padilla finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Despite coming close on numerous occasions, the Cougars never led against Eastern Nazarene. The Lions raced out to early leads of 5-0 and 12-4, but the Cougars played hard and refused to let the game get away. Medgar used an 11-3 run over a span of 2:40 to tie the game at 15-all. That run featured a pair of triples from Green, and a triple and two-point basket by sophomore point guard Andre Evans Jr. The first half would feature three more ties, before the Lions took the lead for good. With the teams knotted at 27 apiece and 4:21 left on the first half clock, Eastern Nazarene closed the session on a 12-2 run to take a 39-29 lead into the locker room at the break.

The Lions opening the second half scoring 11 of the game's next 15 points to push their advantage to 17 points (50-33) with 17 minutes to go. Just as they did in the first half, the Cougars put together another 11-3 run to pull to within single digits at 53-44 with 13:55 to go.

A Nick Manso layup put Eastern Nazarene up by 13, 57-44, with just over 13 minutes left, and for the remainder of the game, the Lions would never lead by any less than 13, eventually going back up as many as 23, before winning by 16.

Eastern Nazarene not only shot 47.9 percent from the floor (35-73), but the Lions also connected on 17 of their 21 attempts from the line (81 percent). On the flip side, Medgar Evers shot an impressive 48.2 percent from the field (27-56), but the Cougars struggled from the line, missing 11 freebees (16-27, 59.3 percent). the Lions held a 42-32 advantage on the glass, while also piling 23 assists to 16 for the hosts. Both teams earned 10 steals apiece, and the Cougars tallied five swatted shots to four for the Lions.

Medgar Evers is now 0-7 at home for the first time in 14 years (2008-2009), but the team will now have two road contests before returning to the Cougars Cave. The Cougars next play a CUNYAC game against the Beavers of CCNY at the Nat Holman Gymnasium this Wednesday, January 11th. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
