Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Despite gritty effort, Cougars fall to first place Beavers, 76-62, in CUNYAC action

The Cougars' men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest last night, falling to the Beavers of the City College of New York by a score of 76-62. The contest took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium in upper Manhattan. With the defeat, Medgar Evers slipped to 3-11 on the season (0-4 CUNYAC). On the flip side, the Beavers maintained their spot atop the CUNYAC standings, improving to a mark of 9-6, and staying unblemished in conference competion with a mark of 4-0.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Joshua Jean Pierre scored a game-high 17 points, knocking down four of his six attempts from the floor, while also nailing all nine of his freebees. He also colected seven rebounds, tallied three assists, and added two steals. Point guard Andre Evans Jr. contributed 15 points while grabbing four boards. Dimitri Weeks added eight points, five rebounds, and three steals, and senior Mousa Sinera finalized his evening with six points, and team-highs of nine rebounds and four steals.

Leading the way for the red-hot Beavers was Yassine Sakhi, as he posted a double-double with a team-high 15 points and game-high 10 rebounds. He also piled three dimes and blocked a shot. Amir Assani contributed 13 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Michael Bowman netted 11 points, grabbed three rebounds, and dished three assists. Finally, it was Dashaun Galloway, Daniel Piszczatowski, and Nana Oteng scoring nine points apiece, with Galloway snatching nine rebounds and tallying a game-high six steals.

CCNY held a 16-point lead twice in the opening half, going up 23-7 with 11:10 remaining, and later, holding on to a 30-14 edge with 6:13 left on the clock. A ferocious 14-3 Cougars run over a span of 4:18 pulled Medgar Evers to within three points at 31-28. That run was highlighted by the play of Weeks and Sinera who scored four points apiece during the spurt. The Beavers would close out the final two minutes of the half by outscoring Medgar 5-0 to take a 36-28 advantage into the locker room at halftime.

The Cougars started the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a three-point basket by Jacob Green. That drew Medgar to within two points at 38-36 with 17:21 remaining. A string of seven consecutive CCNY points over a span of 1:27 put the Beavers back ahead 45-36, however.

Medgar Evers hung around with the first place Beavers, trailing by just seven, 60-53, with 7:34 remaining in the contest. Another 7-0 run by CCNY gave the Beavers a commanding 14-point edge, 67-53, with just 4:48 left. From that point forward, CCNY would never lead by less than 12 points, as the Cougars, despite a valiant effort, came up short.

The teams' shooting percentages differed by just 0.5 percent, as the Beavers nailed 35.3 percent of their shots (24-68), and the Cougars converted on 34.8 percent of theirs (23-66). CCNY dominated the glass, out-rebounding the visitors 52-41, and the Beavers also tallied 21 assists to Medgar Evers' 10. City College narrowly won the turnover battle, committing 20 miscues, while the Cougars had 23.

Medgar Evers will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Cougars will travel to Baruch College to battle the Bearcats in another CUNYAC tilt. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 4:00pm.
