Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Cougars win 71-65, deal Bearcats first CUNYAC defeat

Box Score

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team pulled off a tremendous upset on Wednesday evening, shocking the current first place team in the CUNYAC standings, Baruch College, defeating the Bearcats by a score of 71-65. The game took place at the ARC Arena in New York, NY. The victory snapped the Cougars' four game losing streak, improving Medgar Evers to 6-15 on the year, and a mark of 3-9 in league play. Baruch College had its 10 game winning streak snapped, and the Bearcats' bid for a perfect 14-0 mark in league play was thwarted, as Baruch dipped to 11-1 in CUNYAC competition.

Dante Simmons was on another level this evening, connecting on eight of his 12 attempts from the floor, and 11 of his 12 freebees, to finish with a game-high 28 points. He also snatched 10 rebounds and earned a team-high four steals. Dimitri Weeks scored in double figures, netting 14 points and grabbing three rebounds, and senior Keison McIntosh added eight points, seven boards, and a pair of steals. Junior Mousa Sinera, who entered the game leading NCAA Division III in offensive rebounds per game (5.61), ripped down a game-high 19 boards (five offensive).

Despite the loss for Baruch College, Adnan Bajrami led the way for his squad with a team-high 15 points to go along with a game-high five steals. He also added seven rebounds and three dimes. Emil Purisic finalized his evening with 13 points, three steals, three rebounds, and two assists, and it was Jehmehl Fair contributing 11 points and a team-high eight boards.

Medgar Evers used maximum effort from the entire roster, playing like the hungrier team for most of the evening. The Cougars raced out to leads of 5-1 and 11-9 in the early stages, but Baruch appeared to get it going when it put together a 16-0 run over a span of 4:29 to take a 25-11 advantage with 9:32 remaining in the opening session.

Later, after Baruch College went up 27-17 on a converted layup by Mohamed Gueye with 6:00 left in the half, Medgar Evers' defense stepped up in a huge away, allowing just three Bearcat points the rest of the stanza. The Cougars used that aforementioned shutdown defense and some gritty offense to pull to within three points (30-27) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Throughout the first 10:22 of the second half, there were five lead changes, with the final one taking place when Dimitri Weeks converted on a fastbreak layup to put Medgar Evers ahead 48-47. Over the course of the final 9:38, the Cougars would yield just six Bearcats baskets while connecting on 12 of their 15 attempts from the charity stripe.

For the evening, Medgar Evers converted on 37.3 percent of its attempts from the floor (25-67) while holding Baruch College to a 32.4 percent conversion rate (23-71). The Cougars held a sizable 53-43 edge on the glass, while also swatting five shots to the opposition's two. The Bearcats did hold a 15-10 edge in the steals category, while also committing less turnovers (18 to Medgar's 23). Both teams shot well from the line, with the Cougars misfiring on just three freebees (15-18, 83.3 percent) and Baruch hitting on 72.7 percent of its free throws (16-22).

The Cougars will look to make it two consecutive victories on Friday evening, as they'll welcome the Bloodhounds of John Jay College to the Cougars Cave for a 7:00pm league contest. Prior to the game, Medgar Evers will honor senior Keison McIntosh, saluting him for his contributions to the men's basketball program over the years.
