McIntosh honored on Senior Night; Bloodhounds beat Cougars

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped its final home game of the 2021-2022 season despite a valiant effort, falling to the Bloodhounds of John Jay College on Friday evening by a score of 83-78 at the Cougars Cave. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 6-16 on the year (3-10 in league play) while John Jay improved to 10-12 on the season, including a mark of 7-5 in CUNYAC action.

Prior to the game, the Medgar Evers Department of Athletics took a few moments to honor senior Keison McIntosh in a special ceremony. McIntosh was joined at center court by Director of Athletics Chetara Murphy, Head Men's Basketball Coach Brian Nigro, and friends and family of McIntosh, as assistant coach Brad Oringer took the microphone and spoke glowingly about the standout's accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom. McIntosh was then presented with a commemorative action shot poster in a show of appreciation of his dedication to the program during his tenure at the institution.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, guard Prince-Malachi Reid finalized his evening with a team-high 15 points, connecting on six of his nine attempts from the floor, including three of his five launches from downtown. He also registered two steals and grabbed two rebounds. McIntosh played well on the evening he was honored, connecting on three triples, and five of his 11 shots overall, to finish with 13 points. He also tied for the game-high of three steals, while grabbing two boards. Dimitri Weeks netted 13 points, grabbed six rebounds, tied for the game-high of three steals, and added three assists, and Andre Evans Jr. (10-12 FT) added 12 points. Dante Simmons just missed a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine rebounds, and Mousa Sinera contributed 8 points, and team-highs of 12 rebounds and five assists.

Garrison Watkins was masterful for John Jay in its victory, as he scored a game-high 22 points and registered a game-high eight assists. He also snatched 10 rebounds and collected two steals. Dan Kenny scored 20 points (8-12 FG) while grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds, and Corey Jones Jr. scored 14 points while contributing four assists, and Isaac Holmes finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.

John Jay led by as many as seven in the early stages of the first half, and held a 26-23 edge with 7:00 left I the stanza, but the Cougars put together a 14-0 run over a span of 3:24 to catapult ahead by a score of 37-26. That aforementioned run included four three-point baskets, including two by Reid and two by McIntosh. In what was a back-and-forth game all evening, the Bloodhounds finished the half with a 9-2 spurt. Medgar Evers held a 39-35 lead as time expired on the opening half.

Using the momentum they carried into the locker room, the Bloodhounds scored 21 of the second session's first 32 points to grab a 56-50 lead with 13:30 remaining. Medgar Evers roared back again, going on a 12-5 run to grab a 62-61 advantage with just under 10 minutes to play. John Jay would take the lead back for good with 9:21 left on a converted layup by Kenny. That put the Bloodhounds up 63-62, a lead they would never relinquish.
 
The game stayed so close that John Jay never took more than a four point lead until two seconds remaining, when the Bloodhounds went up by five. The final would be 83-78, marking an end to an incredible season series between John Jay and Medgar Evers, which featured both teams recording victories on the opponent's floor.

The teams earned almost identical shooting percentages for the evening, with the Cougars knocking down 42.9 percent of their attempts from the floor (27-63), and the Bloodhounds hitting on 42.3 percent of theirs (30-71). John Jay dominated the glass, snatching 50 boards to Medgar's 35. The Bloodhounds also dished 22 assists compared to 16 for the Cougars. Medgar Evers did hold an 11-5 edge in the steals category, while also committing just 13 miscues while forcing 16 John Jay mistakes. The Bloodhounds converted on 65.2 percent of their freebees (15-23), while the Cougars had a 60 percent conversion rate (15-25).

Medgar Evers will return to action for its regular season finale on Tuesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to Lehman College's APEX Arena for a league contest with the Lightning. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
