Dimitri Weeks dazzles despite Medgar's 87-80 loss to Brooklyn

The Medgar Evers men's basketball team dropped a CUNYAC contest on Monday evening, falling to neighbor Brooklyn College by a score of 87-80 at the West Quad Gymnasium. With the defeat, the Cougars have now dropped four straight, dipping to 5-15 on the season (2-9 CUNYAC) while the Bulldogs improved to 3-18 on the season, snapping a six game losing skid in the process. Brooklyn is now 2-9 in league play.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, Dimitri Weeks finalized his evening with team-highs of 17 points (6-8 FG) and five assists. The reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Andre Evans Jr. scored 16 points, added five rebounds, stacked four dimes, and collected two steals, and Keison McIntosh nailed three trifectas, finishing with 14 points. Dante Simmons contributed 12 points and nine rebounds while tying for the team-high of five assists and the game-high of four steals, and it was Mousa Sinera posting a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

In the victory for Brooklyn College, Noah Shy scored a game-high 30 points (12-20 FG) while snatching a team-high nine rebounds, adding seven assists, and registering three steals. Kayin Olajide finalized his evening with 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, and Elisha Park scored 17 points in 23 minutes. Finally, it was Zuric Harvey contributing a game-high eight assists.

Things looked promising for Medgar Evers early, as the Cougars raced out to a 12-5 advantage in the opening 5:12 of the contest. Brooklyn's Elisha Park picked up two fouls within the first 3:35 of action, forcing him to the bench for a majority of the opening stanza. The Cougars took advantage, allowing just 29 first half points and taking a solid 39-29 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Brooklyn College turned up the voltage in a big way in the second session, starting the final period on a ferocious 22-5 run to grab a 51-44 lead with 13:07 to go. The Bulldogs gradually built their lead from there, eventually catapulting to a commanding 80-57 advantage with 3:08 remaining. Brooklyn would advance to secure a seven point victory.

The Cougars lost the game despite earning a higher conversion rate from the field and the charity stripe. Medgar Evers connected on 47.5 percent of its attempts from the floor (29-61), while Brooklyn nailed 43.7 percent of its shots. The Cougars were 14-20 from the free throw line (70 percent), with the Bulldogs connecting on 65 percent of its freebees (13-20). Medgar Evers held a 40-32 edge on the glass, and swatted six shots to the opposition's five, but the Bulldogs committed less turnovers (only 16 compared to the Cougars' 22) and tallied more assists (27-19).

Medgar Evers will return to the court on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to the ARC Arena to battle the first place Baruch College Bearcats in a CUNYAC clash. Baruch is currently 11-0 in league play, so Medgar Evers will certainly have a challenge on its hands. Start-time for the game is scheduled for 7:30pm.
