Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars suffer 4-0 defeat to Gothic Knights in home opener

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team dropped its home opener on Friday evening, falling to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University by a score of 4-0. The contest was played at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars slipped to 0-3 on the 2022 campaign, while the Gothic Knights stayed unblemished at 4-0.

NJCU's Maximo Vargas drew a foul in the box at 12:18, and was awarded a penalty kick. He took advantage, slipping the ball into the right corner of the net to give the Gothic Knights a 1-0 edge. 9:08 later, Vargas struck again, receiving a pass from Danny Tobon before burying the ball into the net to give his team a 2-0 advantage. 24 seconds later, Jason Suarez tapped a beautiful pass over to a cutting Jacobo Espinosa, who blasted the ball home to give NJCU a commanding 3-0 edge. That would be the last goal of the session, with the Gothic Knights taking a three goal lead into the break.

In the second half, NJCU would add one more tally, as Nate Russell scored off of a pass from Gabe Cruz at 77:26 to make it 4-0.

The Gothic Knights earned the shutout, using three goalkeepers on the afternoon, including Nick Linebaugh (30:20 of game action), Khalid Kwaik (39:53 of pitch time), and Isaac Atehortua (19:47 of credited time). Linebaugh left the contest holding a 3-0 advantage, earning him the win and improving his record to 4-0 in net for the 2022 season.

Cougars netminder Louis Caiola played very well despite allowing four goals, as he made 12 saves, including some very athletic stops to keep the score respectable.

Medgar Evers will return to the pitch on Wednesday evening, as the Cougars will travel to King's Point, NY to take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Start-time for the match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
