Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Despite valiant effort and hearty showing, Cougars drop non-conference clash to Maritime

The Medgar Evers women's volleyball team put forth a valiant effort on Thursday evening, but ultimately fell to non-conference foe SUNY Maritime at the Cougars Cave by scores of 12-25, 17-25, and 19-25. With the defeat, Medgar Evers dipped to 1-8 on the 2022 campaign, while the Privateers evened their mark at 2-2.

Despite the loss for the Cougars, veteran Cristal Joseph paced her squad, registering a team-high two kills, while also contributing four digs and three service aces. Newcomer Raine Williams notched four service aces and two digs, and Quiara Brye Bey added a match-high 10 digs, and a team-best two assists.

Celyna Custodio paced the Privateers with a match-high 12 kills, hitting .375 and committing just three attack errors in 24 attempts.  Jessica Mele registered six kills to go along with a team-high seven digs, and Brooke Kirchner finalized her evening with a match-high 22 assists, and five aces.  Carolina Bersani added six service aces, and Kelly Kuhn compiled four aces, as Maritime piled 20 aces on the evening.

The Cougars refused to go quietly in this one, keeping things interesting in sets two and three. SUNY Maritime built a commanding 18-7 edge in the second set, but five consecutive points pulled Medgar Evers to within six at 18-12. Medgar kept pace, later trailing 23-17, before falling 25-17.

In the third set, the Cougars gave SUNY Maritime a scare. The Privateers had victory within their grasps, holding a 19-7 advantage, but eight consecutive Cougars points made it 19-15 in favor of the visitors. Raine Williams notched three consecutive service aces during that run for Medgar Evers. A 5-2 run by the Privateers put Maritime within one point away from winning the match, but the Cougars continued to grind, as a kill by Joseph and a service ace by Britonya Lloyd made it 24-19. SUNY Maritime finally closed it out when Kirchner set up Mele beautifully, as Mele picked up a kill, slamming the ball into the back right corner of Medgar's side to win the match.

The Cougars will look to bounce back on Tuesday evening, as Medgar Evers will travel to Morristown, NJ to battle non-conference opponent Saint Elizabeth University. Start-time for the clash is set for 7:00pm.
