Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars edged by Patriots in non-conference Saturday matinee

The Medgar Evers men's soccer team dropped a tough match on Saturday afternoon, getting edged by the Patriots of Valley Forge University by a score of 2-1. The match was played at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. With the defeat, the Cougars dipped to 0-7 on the 2022 campaign, while Valley Forge University improved to 2-5.

The Cougars struck first just 72 seconds into the match, as veteran Daniel Hackett lifted a ball from midfield, which was headed into the net by Belco Guendeba in what was a sensational goal. Medgar Evers held the lead for 40:52, until Valley Forge knotted the score at a goal apiece when Eric Henshaw scored on a flurry in the box following a free kick. Isai Molina picked up the assist on Henshaw's equalizer. As time expired on the opening session, the match was tied, 1-1.

Valley Forge University went ahead for good, breaking the 1-1 tie 72:13 into the match when Anthony Konah struck from 18 yards out, burying the ball into the top left corner to make it 2-1 Patriots. That would be the final goal scored by either side, as Valley Forge University would hold on for the one goal victory.

Cougars netminder Louis Caiola played well despite his team taking the loss. He made eight saves on the afternoon despite yielding the two goals. Valley Forge University starting goaltender Juan Garcia Flores allowed one goal and stopped on shot in 45 minutes of action. His second half replacement, Abner Gabriel Camacho, made three saves and didn't allow a score in getting the victory in net.

The Patriots held a 19-10 advantage in the shots category.

Medgar Evers will now have three days off before returning to the pitch on Wednesday evening, as Medgar Evers will host CUNYAC foe Baruch College. That match will take place at Kingsborough Community College, with a start-time of 5:00pm.
